Little updates in the barn

September 18, 2014 by Kim Woodward

Are you tired of my barn updates?

Don’t answer that.

We are making progress on lots of little things, and getting “so” close to calling this puppy done. Or, at least done enough.

I took a new photo from the outside. It’s just such an amazing little place, don’t you think?

The grasses are OUT OF CONTROL at the property. And that’s not at all something we have made progress on. Mowing is at the bottom of the list of things that I care about.Barn updates September5

But, Henry’s room has carpeting. Which is better than a subfloor. We didn’t have enough wood flooring to extend into this room, and I sort of wanted something softer anyhow. It’s such a tiny space that adding a rug wasn’t an option.

So, we picked up a simple greige carpeting from Menards with a foam backing. Ryan cut it to size and then laid it down in the room. We didn’t get carpet that required stretching and installation because the room is seriously TINY and it wouldn’t be worth the effort or cost. (We used this same approach in our rental property and talked about it here.) This carpet runs about $1/square foot. But it looks pretty good.

Because the room is the tiniest, there’s no room for any closet or wardrobe. Let’s be honest. It’s smaller than most closets.

So, I picked up this shelf with an attached rod at IKEA. (I can’t find it online, although I’m sure it exists.) It should actually allow us to hang quite a bit of his clothes, and then we’ll put the rest in a small dresser.

And our bathroom is also coming along, thanks in part to the kindness of others.

The light fixture was made by my father-in-law after I couldn’t find anything I liked and would work for the bathroom. (Because of the ceiling sloping, we are pretty limited to fixtures.) The framed tree branches were made by our friends Dave and Pam. I loved it and Pam gave it to me. It’ll be perfect for towels.Barn updates September4
And my dad offered to help finish many of the last details in the bathroom for us – the light, mirror, shower/tub surround, window trim, and curtain rod. It’s such a huge load off Ryan’s shoulders and can’t wait to have a truly fully-functioning bathroom. He’s working on it this week.

I feel like I have a dream team. And I just write about it all.

It’s going to be so charming and warm. I don’t remember what kind of bed Henry has, but you could add drawers underneath for undies, socks and gloves. Love the light fixture!

So close! Our grass is out of control, too, and we don’t even have an excuse like owning a bunch of land and not living there yet and having to get a barn ready to live in and …..you have a lot of excuses, actually. I have none.

No! Never tired of reading your barn updates! I love them 🙂 I think what you and your family is doing is incredible (and it my dream to live in a barn someday!) I was telling my husband last night all about your barn, and pond, and how you guys are building up passive income with rental properties. Seriously, so inspired!

The barn is coming along so beautifully! I love the lamp that your father-in-law made for the bathroom. It would be great in a boys room, too. Please do a tutorial on it.
Thanks for sharing. You do have a dream team.
