Last-minute DIY patriotic outfit

July 3, 2015 by Kim Woodward

I am aware that it’s the THIRD of July.

Which means that it my world, you still have nearly 24 hours to complete your DIY red white and blue outfit for yourself or your kids.

Because if you don’t have a flag on your clothes tomorrow, I’ll be disappointed. Really, really disappointed.

Unless you don’t live in America. In which case I’ll only be a tiny bit disappointed.

Here’s a simple way to dress up some shorts you ALREADY HAVE IN YOUR DRESSER.

You’re welcome.

I will, however, not be sharing the tutorial to make yourself the most adorable 3-year-old in America. That’s a different type of blog, folks. NewlyWoodwards is family-friendly.

I picked these white shorts to spruce up for Henry this year. Because what crazy woman buys her three-year-old WHITE SHORTS?

Me. That’s who. The woman who lives in a barn. Next to a construction zone. WITH SO MUCH MUD.

I added three strips of painter’s tape to the right leg and stars to the right. (I cut the stars on my Silhouette, but I would imagine you could use star stickers and some patience.)

Once the stencils were on, I simply used fabric paint and a sponge brush to blot on some color (red for the stripes and blue for the stars, in case you don’t remember). For the blue, I didn’t worry about solid color. I liked the acid-wash look.

I usually have very little patience for waiting, so I take off the stencils immediately (and carefully). Use tweezers for tiny pieces.

And voila – flag shorts. I love them with all my patriotic heart.

But not as much as I love my little Yankee Doodle Dandy.

And because I can’t leave well enough alone, I also added a little AMERICA love to a red t-shirt. (I used a vinyl stencil and white fabric ink.)

Happy 4th, friends! Hope it’s a safe and happy holiday weekend!
