Instagram window collage and Valentine’s mantel

Well, I’m just in the nick of time for our Valentine’s Day mantel and a new photo project. Last week, I was sitting looking at the mantel with my new Valentine’s Day hoop art, it hit me like a ton of bricks. The antique window art needed to be covered in pictures.
And so it was so.
You may remember the old window – I get so many comments about it. It’s an original window that we removed from our first house. It’s original to the house, so circa approximately 1910. I only saved one, and I kind of kick myself for not saving them all. But, anyhow, I wanted to make this into a piece of art. So, I cleaned it and added some vinyl and voila. Monogram art.
I wanted to display a bunch of the photos I’ve taken on Instagram, particularly since Henry was born in May. (You can follow me on Instagram as newlywoodwards. I am sort of an insta-addict.) I don’t actually have may personal photos hanging on the walls, and thought this would be a good way to add some.
This ended up being a simple and quick project that made a big impact. I started with the window. I traced it onto a piece of Kraft paper to use for the base of the collage. I didn’t want this to be permanent
Then, I pulled out the images I had printed as 4×4 prints on mpix. (I used the mpix app.) Total, I spent about $25 (with shipping) on the prints. I didn’t spend too much time worrying about placement. Having the Kraft paper helped me to assemble them, but I ended up not needing to use the paper to mount on the frame.
Once I was happy with the placement, I taped the prints together on the back so they were flush against one another.
Then, I simply used masking tape to attach to the back of the wooden frame. Bing, bang and boom.
I also added two of Henry’s Valentine’s Day photos to funky frames and attached them to the berry wreaths I hung for Christmas.
And that’s how I added a little personality and love to the mantel for Valentine’s Day. I sort of wish I would have ordered the prints as black and white because they compete with the monogram on the glass, but I still like the grid look and variety of images for now. And when I swap them out, I may try all black and white instead.
Let’s just pretend I swept the tile before I took these pictures. You don’t even notice all the ashes by the fireplace, do you?

  10. Love it! I did an instagram collage over our mantle for valentines day, although I just taped them to the wall in the shape of a heart. This is much nicer! Love the Henry pictures!
