Inspired: Shelves made from vintage suitcases for a transportation-themed nursery

September 18, 2013 by Kim Woodward

Sometimes, I find things that are just plain inspired. While not my personal projects, I want to share them with you.

While we were visiting our newest nephew last weekend, I became totally obsessed with the FABULOUS shelves my brother-in-law created in Spencer’s nursery.

They are made from vintage suitcases and I think they may be some of the coolest artwork-slash-shelving-slash-storage I’ve ever encountered. I mean, totally inspired.

To mount them, he drilled a board of  the same width as the suitcase onto the wall. Then, he cut off the suitcase to the depth desired and drilled a screw into the sides of the suitcase to go into the boards.

I mean, have you ever seen anything so cool?Transportation nursery inspiration3

This is part of Spencer’s vintage transportation nursery. I think this is such a great theme for a boy’s nursery. The Route 66 sign was another detail I loved. (You can also check out the Route 66 basket I found and the quilt I made from yesterday.)

This has my mind spinning for ideas of other things I can make into shelves.

Do you love this as much as I do?

This is perfect timing!!! I have been feeling so uninspired for my poor little man’s room in the new house. He really likes trains, and I have a bunch of “garage” signs, like the route 66 one. IDEAS FORMED! THANK YOU!!

Oh. My. Gosh. This is my favorite shelving idea I have ever seen. I collect old trunks and vintage suitcases. If these shelves don’t belong in my possession, I don’t know what does. Thank you for sharing Kim.

I love them. I actually ‘pinned’ a image not to long ago that had them on an entry wall. I just hadn’t figured out how they cut through the suitcases – the metal and leather? The solid leather sure but all the ones in my stash have the metal band. Any ideas? Xo.
