Guest Post: Sarah’s Ballard-inspired Pruvost Plaque

April 13, 2011 by Kim Woodward

Today, I’m turning it over to my in-real-life friend Sarah. She loves all things home, DIY and design. (I guess we have a lot in common).

(Sarah and her husband, Mike.)

So, when she sent me a picture message about her new DIY Ballard-inspired sign, I immediately texted back and told her that I must share it on the blog. She kindly obliged with the information below.

So, help me welcome Sarah and her beautiful French-looking plaque, inspired by Ballard Designs.

Take it, Sarah…

I absolutely LOVE Ballard Designs. If I had all the money in the world, I would by my furnishings and decor from Ballard Designs. I’ve been jonesing this Pruvost Plaque for about 6 months – . But with a price tag of $259, I thought I’d pass.

(Ballard Designs)

A few months ago, my husband and I blew in more insulation in the attic. The insulation came on an old weathered oak pallet. Lightbulb!! God had a plan!

I kept the pallet and this weekend when it was beautiful outside, I busted it out. Here are the steps we took:

  • We removed the slats with a crowbar and hammer.
  • Then, I laid the wood on the ground and sketched the outline of the design above with a pencil. I went over the sketch with a sharpie.
  •  DH cut the wood with a jig saw. He cut a few extra pieces from the pallet to act as a backing to keep it together and nailed those in from the back so there wouldn’t be any nail heads showing on the front.
  •  Next, I turned to my trusty Cricut where I created a stencil for the words. I already had some dark brown craft paint so I used that to create the worlds.

We hung it last night and I can’t stop beaming every time I walk into the living room. LOVE IT! And because we owned everything we used, it cost me $0!!

(Kim’s note: See that awesome console table at the bottom? It was made by Sarah and her husband from an Ana-White.com plan. Fabulous.)
Thanks to Sarah for sharing her awesome plaque. What a beautiful piece! I would have believed it was a $259 Ballard piece. Actually I like it better.
Are you totally loving this sign?

It’s lovely, but, um, has she misspelled confiserie? Hers seems to say confisere. (The sign says confectionery of Flanders, btw).

BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN??? Sorry, just curious. Anyway, this looks so much better than the original too, great job Sarah! I totally have a Cricut but never use it. But apparently there’s a bunch of people who now need one!

It looks great – just like the Ballard version, but better because it was free! 🙂
