Garden progress – August edition

August 5, 2009 by Kim Woodward

Everything in the garden is coming along swimmingly – although keeping weeds and beetles at bay is becoming a losing battle.

Since the last update, I’ve picked eight cucumbers, ten tomatoes and five green and peppers. I’ve also picked the cauliflower and almost a dozen banana peppers.
Here’s what came out of the garden on Tuesday (2 cukes, ginormous cauliflower, one green pepper, 6 banana peppers, three orange tomatoes and one gigantor tomato).
There are lots more where that came from.
Cucumbers: going wild. They are just growing everywhere. The variety we planted grow pretty large and are very well shaped.

Green peppers: I just found out we can chop these and freeze them for the winter, so I’m excited about that. We will have tons of them. There are at least 20 blooms on these plants.
One lone red pepper: I’m pretty sure we’ll be snatching this up soon. It won’t last long – we love red peppers.
Cauliflower: It finally came in and is looking healthy. I’m happy I finally got to pick it because the leaves take up TONS of space. It’s quite yummy, but I don’t know if I’d plant it again in a small garden.

Cherry tomatoes – they are cherry tomatoes ON STEROIDS. They are far too big to be cherry tomatoes. This is a plant I started from seed in the house, so I’m mighty proud.

Banana Peppers – These are growing like wild. Ryan plopped some of them into the jar of pickled banana peppers, and they are delicious. These are really yummy and great in chili. They were also started from seed in the house.

Eggplants: are WHITE? The blooms were purple so I assumed they would also be purple. This is another plant that I’ve been wondering when to pick. There are currently four eggplants on this one plant. I think I should let them get bigger. But, I’m still baffled over them being white?

And, in the rain garden….
The black-eyed-susan are blooming. They are quite pretty.

And, thanks to the squirrels (or my husband) there are several stalks of corn coming in. We feed the squirrel corn and a while back we notice there were several corn stalks coming in the rain garden.

Ryan won’t let me take them out. So, they stay. He’s going to do something so they will pollinate. He’s ridiculously proud of them. He wanted to plant corn really bad this year, but we didn’t plant it. I guess that the squirrels made sure he got his way.

These cute little mini sunflowers also bloomed on the deck. They are quite adorable.
Pretty soon, we are going to re-plant radishes, lettuce and carrots. I’m hoping to get another crop in the fall.
Overall, I think the wet and cool weather has helped all the plants. It’s been a great learning experience this year.
How is your garden growing?

I am enjoying all of the veggies from our garden, especially the tomatoes. We have started picking green beans as well. I think that we have eaten all the broccoli and cauliflower that we planted. We are already making plans to expand the garden next year.

Looks so delicious. I want your banana pepper crop for my daily sandwich. And I never knew Jenny’s tip about peppers, so cool!

Looking good! Did you know that your green peppers will turn red and then eventually yellow if you leave them on the vine? They get progressively sweeter, so you can just let them ripen to taste. 🙂

    Garden looks great!
My hubby wanted to plant corn, too. He never got around to it, and I guess our squirrels weren’t quite as helpful. 🙂
