A fun Easter Egg project

April 12, 2011 by Kim Woodward

You have got to try this, friends.

Silk-dyed Easter eggs.

They are so darn pretty.

Mom and I decided we needed to try it after seeing it on Martha Stewart and Skip to My Lou. So we stopped at the local Goodwill in Arizona and picked up 7 silk ties that caught our fancy (around $8 total). There were silk ties everywhere! We ended up using 3 of them to dye a dozen eggs.

We basically followed the instructions in the links above (which are super easy), but we found it simpler and more effective to use rubber bands to secure two ends of the silk around the egg to look like a Werther’s candy. (The links above call for fabric to secure the silk.)

Not only did the eggs turn out so pretty, it was also super easy and much less messy than traditional egg dying. It’s a fun surprise to see what they look like at the end. (Ryan and my dad didn’t have much faith that they would turn out well.)

I think I’ll be doing this every year.

I may even have to try another batch at home before Easter.

What do you think? Do you dye Easter eggs?

I have been searching for over thirty minutes to find the ‘actual directions’ for the silk tie Easter eggs.
    Very frustrating

There are two links in the fourth paragraph that take you directly to the instructions. One is at Martha and one at Skip to my Lou. I’m sorry you are frustrated but I prefer to send readers to the source instead of repeating instructions. Thanks for stopping by.

First-time commenter who just HAD to relinquish her stalker status to let you know that I made these with my mom this weekend, after seeing them for the first time on your blog. Thanks for the amazing tip. They were beautiful and easy, but crafting with my mom again was the best Easter gift.

I finally dyed my eggs yesterday. It’s so Ahh-MAZE-ing how these turn out. I will totally be doing this EVERY year. (And now I have way more boiled eggs on hand than any one person should have. Even around Easter. Ehh… At least they are pretty. Egg Salad sammich anyone?

    i’m loving these!!

my question is this – did you just use regular eggs (not blown out ones?) and if so, since they “cook” for so long, and they like actual cooked eggs when you are done, or still hard like raw eggs? i’m just curious if they would get smelly or not!

this seems like a fun project to try! (and an excuse to buy some crazy ties!)

Another person that has never seen this before…must be living under a rock. Who knew you could get such beautiful results with some thrift store ties? They look amazing!

I’ve never seen this before either. Yours turned out awesome. I love the purple flowery one. Can’t wait to hit my Goodwill in search of ties.

I’m not sure why, but this egg dying approach never appealed to me until I read your blog. Now I can’t wait to try it. Thanks!

It has been ages since ive done anything with Easter Eggs. Now that my son is 3 I think it’s time to start busting out the ol’ Easter egg decoration skills. I will for sure have to try this tie-trick this year, thanks for sharing! 🙂
