Frugal & Fabulous: Freeze-worthy

April 7, 2009 by Kim Woodward

Time for another episode of:

In the April issue of Women’s Day (which by the way, is a great lifestyle mag, that I happen to enjoy via a free subscription through an online offer), they had a great little chart of items you can freeze.
Lightbulb!
If I can freeze these items, I should be stocking up when they are on sale.

I thought you may be interested in finding out about what freezes well too, so you can have a lightbulb moment too, and save some cashola.
So, here is the list of items to freeze, courtesy of Women’s Day.
Butter
Frozen veggies (artichoke hearts, peas, cut-leaf spinach, broccoli florets, squash)
Bread
Nuts & seeds
Whole-wheat flour
Whole grains (brown rice, buckwheat)
Wheat germ
Coffee
Lower-fat milk (remove 1 cup before freezing; the package will expand)
I don’t know about you, but I had no clue that you could freeze bread, butter or milk.
Plus, I did a little more digging (online of course), and found out that you can also freeze cheese. This is fabulous, because cheese is often on sale. Just a few weeks ago, Hy-Vee had packaged shredded cheese on sale for $.99! This is a grrrreat deal! I stocked up on enough cheese for a month… maybe more. I’m not going to lie, we eat a lot of cheese. I’ve saved a bunch of money.
I’m also going to try the milk, because I often see this on sale. This also really makes me want to get a deep freeze, but that may be longer-term. =) (Ryan… can we get a deep freezer?)
What do you think? Would you freeze items to take advantages of sales?

My freezer is always packed full of stuff!! I second Leigh’s warning on freezing cheese… it’s ok if it’s shredded, but if you freeze a block of cheese and then want to slice/shred it later, it will crumble into a million pieces and make you very angry (well, it makes me angry). 🙂 But if you find a great deal on block cheese, shred it yourself and then freeze it. 🙂

Jen – thanks for the tip on baking.

If I ever decide to bake, I’ll have to try that. =)

I got talked into buying a deep freezer about a year ago…and now I can’t remember life before. It is wonderful!

I love freezing shredded cheese (cheddar and mozzarella), but sliced or block cheese doesn’t seem to work as well. You can also freeze fresh berries- tip don’t wash them first and lay them flat on cookie sheet in the freezer. Once frozen dump in a bag. Blueberries always go on sale- I buy and bunch to freeze. You can also make and freeze baked goods like banana bread and muffins

We freeze so much. I always have at least 2 loaves of bread and 1 pound of butter in my fridge. I’ve never done milk, but my friend has. I also try to have at least 3 meals in there (as well as a batch of cookies, but don’t tell anyone, it’s my secret stash).

If you get stocked up on all the essentials the bike rides to the store will be a lot easier this summer!

I definitely take advantage of sales in that way. We decided to buy a small deep freeze about a year ago and it was a great purchase for us. Since my hubby eats a lot of frozen pizza(I know, not the healthiest), I am always looking for deals on pizza. I just found out you can freeze cream cheese too! As long as you wrap it up very well. Thanks for sharing that list.

My grandmother was always freezing bread…but I sure didin’t know about butter, cheese and milk? We also use a lot of cheese, but we dont have much freezer space so not sure this would work for us?

I have two small freezers and plan on getting a third bigger one. Love freezing stuff when it’s on sale! Be aware that cheese does change texture a little once it’s thawed – cheddar cheese becomes a little more crumbly so it can be tricky to slice for sandwiches. But shredded cheese will be fine and you won’t notice much difference.

If you bake then try baking big batches and freezing the goods once they are just-cool – they will be gorgeous and moist when you defrost them later.

Definitely! We have a side by side fridge though, so freezer space is at a premium. We try to only buy Chicken breasts on sale and individually package and freeze them. Thanks for the list!
