Flowers, finally, and other curb appeal progress

May 23, 2011 by Kim Woodward

Well, this weekend managed to provide me with a little time to finally plant the flowers I’ve had on the porch for weeks. Thank you, Mother Nature.

I also thought it may be time to swap out the Christmas door mat. So, I picked up this great geometric door mat at IKEA.

And do you see those lilacs to the left? We cut them to the ground when we moved in because they were so out-of-control. This the first year they’ve really bloomed. Such a great scent in the open windows.

All of our massive and out-of-control iris have bloomed.

Once they are finished, I’m planning to break them up because they have taken over the garden bed. It’s been three years, so it’s time. I may devote an entire garden bed to them at the new house.

And my tin can containers, all are now full.

So, that’s my little attempt with flowers and curb appeal. Pretty flowers make a happy house.

What do you think?

So pretty! Your house has such great curb appeal – love the red & gray combo!

When you split your irises, will you provide instructions/tips? I have a few bunches of irises that need to be split this summer…

Pretty flowers DO make a happy house! I inherited some peonies in the front of my new house and I was so excited when they bloomed! However, just two short weeks later, the blooms are all yucky and they were so heavy they all laid right down on the ground. Boo. I may have to make them cages or just transfer them to the backyard, so I don’t care as much about how they look after the pretty…

Beautiful! The irises need to be divided. Plant the extras some place else or trade/give them away. That lilac is so small! Why did you prune it like that? Every time you prune it extensively or stress it out by transplanting the blooms will smaller the next year. That common type of light purple lilac will have 8″ long blooms if left alone. But it will get big…it shouldn’t have been planted so close to the house. Transplant it to a nice open spot it can get 10′ tall and nearly as wide then leave it alone. It will reward you with maintenance free beautiful blooms that smell gorgeous.

I just turned the laptop around and whined to John, look how cute their house is! This is how I want our house to look!

Seriously, I love it. Don’t get rid of it before I get out there to see it. I feel like it’s a landmark, I want to get my picture on your front porch with a fanny pack and a camera around my neck.

Oh and I never thought of lilac! It looks so pretty, I think I might want to put that along the side of my house. You’re a friggin lifesaver.

Oh and remember you posted that my summer to-do list was more like a weekend list for you guys? Well, I LOVED that comment and made sure to show John, give him a little kick in the pants if you will 🙂

I agree! No house is complete without flowers. 🙂 I planted a few a couple weekends ago, and they seem to be coming along nicely. I loooove your lilac – that’s my absolute FAVORITE scent, but for some reason I’ve never grown one. My neighbor gave me one last year but (whispers) I accidentally mowed over it.
