Oh, hey. Remember that one time we were building a house?
Oh. Yeah. That.
I keep wanting to share things that are happening, but all the work isn’t really “blogworthy,” per say. Like all the electrical work that Ryan and the dads have been doing – it’s obviously super important to have things like working lights, but I can only show you so many photos of an electrical box.
Even if it is the BEST. ELECTRICAL. BOX. IN. THE. WORLD.
And you don’t really want to see every single outlet Ryan installed? There are a lot of them. And they all sort of look the same.
You can use the same logic for garage drywalling, installing attic stairs, insulating said attic and spending WAY TOO MUCH TIME SHOPPING FOR ALL THE SUPPLIES THAT GO INTO BUILDING A HOUSE.
I am capping that because I simply cannot shop for home things anymore. I cannot look at another bathtub, faucet or vanity. I can’t even think any more about light fixtures. And thinking about paint colors and trim work makes me break out in hives.
My brain is shutting down.
But anyhow … before it started snowing, Ryan hurried to get the front and back porches installed.
We *could* have waited to do this until the spring, but I really wanted the porches installed. Mostly to decorate them. But also to decorate them. But really, it’s nice to have legit floors on the porches for safety AND for aesthetics.
Instead of pouring concrete, I wanted a wood painted porch. Mostly to go with the farmhouse feel of the home but also because it’s about a million times cheaper and we could do it ourselves. We chose to install fir floors – they are said to be very durable outside when painted.
Ryan installed them and caulked in between. We did some research and talked to some people, and that seemed to be the consensus to keep them from getting too much water in between them. They were installed like hardwood floors (and could also be used inside).
And they are gorgeous. The color of the wood was insanely pretty. I immediately wondered if I was committing some sort of sin in painting them.

So I asked my Instagram friends and they assured me that, yes, I would be committing a felony by painting these floors and should be jailed for even thinking about it.
So then I did what I do – I painted them.

Because I care desperately about what other people think – clearly.
Actually, it just made more sense to me. The painted color ties into the home and feels more authentic. It’s much easier to touch up paint than it is to touch up stain (ask me how I know), and I just like to go against popular opinion.
But look – it really does look pretty. I just did a light sanding on the boards, cleaned them well, and gave them two coats of porch paint. (I purchased the paint at Home Depot – it’s Behr porch paint in satin finish, tinted to match Behr Pumice.)
I was able to do this between rain and snow in an effort to get them protected before they got too wet. Fingers crossed they hold up well to our cold and wet winter. Both porches are covered, which I hope will help.
If not, it’s just paint and I can touch it up again and again.
Where did you purchase the deck floors from, we are remodeling an old farmhouse and have some douglas fir flooring inside and would love to stick with it!
We got them at Menards, but I think they are the same flooring that you would use inside.
The look amazing! I would have been so hard to paint them, because the wood looked so good. But, I always think its best to go with your gut and they turned out good!
I think the porch looks great painted. Hopefully you got it done in time like you said in your blog! Crossing fingers now!! 🙂
Fantastic changes! I really like the banister and stairway area, the color changes the entire look and feel! Great work.
I think the porch looks great! Sometimes you just have to go with what is best for you and your vision and not what others think..and it looks like you have no problem doing that! Good for you!
It looks absolutely gorgeous Kim. I just LOVE how your whole house is coming together. I can’t wait to start seeing more of the interior 🙂
It looks great! I can’t believe how fast this house is going up. Although I’m sure it feels much faster to me than to you.
I missed your Instagram opinion seeking…I probably would have been totally undecided, but it looks great painted (and, yes, ties into the house better than unpainted, I think)
The color looks great with the house Kim!
Thank you so much! I’m really happy with it!
I would have painted too. It looks VERY pretty!
