If you’ve been around for any length of time, you know that I love decorating my son’s room for Christmas. It’s just a fun tradition to do together.
Since he was born, we’ve been decking those halls. And as he gets older, he takes pride in taking the lead on the “design decisions.” Like the year he decided he wanted a full-size dinosaur tree.
This year, Lucy got in on the action, too. I’m still doing the decorating in her room, but I basically just used things she already had – like flowers and rainbow pom poms. Her personalized swaddle blanket was the perfect tree skirt.
This is a good reminder that it doesn’t have to be perfect or extravagant. Just a fun little touch for the holidays.
And it still fits into the entire feel of her room. (These are just 4-foot lit trees I purchased at Dollar Tree for $15. They have very few lights on them, which is nice for bedrooms (to keep them from being too bright at bedtime). And I can actually store them in their closets, which is so handy. )
Now with older kids, it can be hard to be “hands-off.” I’ve seen so many gorgeous kids rooms decorated for Christmas, and I would love to recreate them.
But I have felt a nudge to relinquish control and back away from perfection. Giving Henry full control over the decorations in his room has been so worth it.
Would you ever let your older kids take the reigns? Henry positively LIGHTS UP when he’s talking about his room and tree. It’s full of things he has made and collected over the years. It’s not neat and tidy. But neither is my 6-year-old. And we all love it.
He wanted more lights, so we strung them around his pegboard wall. It’s festive and fun. He added the pennant he made in front of the tree because he thought it would be a good reminder to Lucy to keep away. The verdict is still out.
Instead of telling Henry what to do, I just brought everything out and watched him put it together. It was a special memory this year.
It’s not always easy to let my kids have control. But it’s been such a joy to watch him take the lead on this. And when someone visits the house, the first place he takes them is to his room to see his tree. I could die – it’s so cute.
