Barn windows and doors and your opinions on door colors

September 25, 2013 by Kim Woodward

Barn progress is being made, folks. I will share more about painting the windows soon. For now, let’s just sigh together as we look at the progress. It’s a beautiful thing.

Barn windows3

Do you remember what the barn looked like in it’s original home? (Recap for those new to this craziness: Ryan disassembled a 100+ year-old corn crib, transported the pieces to the property and rebuilt it.)

We’re putting in double hung windows upstairs, but the downstairs windows are painted, installed and trimmed. Still have to touch up paint and clean them, but they are really looking nice.

Ryan and my brother Ky-Ky-Rena were on a roll and installed the two doors, too. Reminder – the upstairs door will go out to a deck (eventually) and will be the main entrance into the upstairs apartment.

And the entry door downstairs was also installed.

This leads me to my question for you, dear friends.

Would you paint the two exterior doors white or another color?

I used the Behr “Paint Your Place” tool on their website to try a few colors I thought would work. What do you think? (Reminder: the upstairs window and large garage door will be white.)

Weigh in…

Disclosure: We were provided with stain from Behr that was used to complete this project. But all opinions, as always, are our own.

It’s hard to come by well-informed people in this particular subject, but you sound like
you know what you’re talking about! Thanks

My first instinct was white, but then I saw Anabells comment and link with the light sage door with wide white trim, love it. I feel a white door won’t be able to compete next to a huge expanse of white barn door, maybe paint big door red w white trim, and entry door a color (sage green, navy, black) so the eye is obviously drawn to your front door.

OMG I love your barn!! It’s the perfect mix of old and new!! I would definitely go with white….. for the contrast of the white on the red and keeping it consistent with the windows. If you had to twist my arm I’d say the starless night (dk grey bottom right), but I would keep the trim around it white to make it really stand out!! 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you decide to do with it!!

I vote color =) Starless night looks pretty. It’s coming together so well!

I love the white. That’s really lame of me, isn’t it? It’s just so classic! But my second choice would have to be Broadway. That’s a gorgeous color.

  6. Lauren says

    September 26, 2013 at 12:50 PM

    Broadway or White! For sure.

  7. Vanessa says

    September 26, 2013 at 9:49 AM

I say Starless Night. White is just too white and sometimes can go boring instead of classic. You will still have the white windows.

    September 26, 2013 at 7:37 AM

I like the Broadway color if you’re going to stray from white. ANd also? You guys are machines. Legit robots. Beep bop boop!

I like the crisp white too against the red. You guys rule. How cool is this barn. I got to say it again. Love that there will be a deck and upstairs apartment.

I vote to keep them white, it looks cleaners to me since the windows and the other door is white.

    September 25, 2013 at 8:45 PM

I was all for white until I saw that “starry night” color and now I’m smitten. Go dark with the door! DOOOO ITTTTTT.

    September 25, 2013 at 7:19 PM

I used to be into white doors only. And then I painted our mudroom door dark. It’s never dirty…or at least I don’t know that it’s dirty.

What about a navy? Your style is very Americana and could you get more Americana than a red barn with a navy door with a barn quilt. Bam.

I love how the white pops and looks classic!

  14. Amber @ Wills Casa says

Every time you talk about the barn I get so excited. This is going to be so much fun to follow the process! I say wait until the windows and doors are all installed then decide. I like the idea of having the door a different color but not sure which until the other pieces are up. Then I reserve the right to decide I like it better white!

    White!

  16. Donna says

    September 25, 2013 at 4:20 PM

I think the pewter (gray) would be nice. Reinforces the roof color and tones down the white, which I love, but it shouts new, new, new! A fabulous project and job well done!! I love it.

My vote is for Behr Broadway with White trim. Best of both worlds – a contrasting color on the door and the pop of white to make it stand out too.
Lookin’ good. Keep it up! 🙂

    September 25, 2013 at 1:45 PM

I’d go with Broadway! It’s my favorite out of all four options, though white sounds nice as well…

Can I be the rebel and say yellow? Or is that too crazy? I love the white trim on the windows, so if I have to follow the rules, then I say white. It looks fantastic.

  21. Emily @ imperfect says

    September 25, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Also, the barn looks awesome. Love the windows, and the roof. Can Nell have her wedding reception in your barn? K, great. Thanks.

  22. Emily @ imperfect says

    September 25, 2013 at 12:51 PM

If there were no other doors or openings to consider, I would say color, but for how close the side door will sit to the garage door, I think definitely keep the doors white. You don’t want them competing, and the garage door, based on sheer size alone, would win. Plus, I love how the red looks popping off of the crisp white.

Normally I would be all about going out of the box, but there’s something about white on a red barn. I think it looks so crisp and beautiful!

I like it in white, but another idea would be a dark turquoise like this one – I hope the link works. It should open up a bigger swatch on the left in the middle: https://www.google.com/search?q=dark+turquoise&client=firefox-a&hs=zmZ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=iR1DUo2XE4qtigLa-YGYAw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1549&bih=986&dpr=0.9#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=4tQHhMDK7_nLYM%3A%3B8r7s0xpPkMiV6M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.silk-kurtinz.com%252Fimages%252Fk_vienna_dark%29turquoise_167.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.silk-kurtinz.com%252Fproduct%252Fsilk-fabric%252Fdark-turquoise-167%3B2708%3B1292

I say Yellow, but I tend to lean towards the “WOW” sometimes. Plus yellow would probably look weird, so there’s that.
I’m loving this barn. So excited for you guys!

White please. But possibly consider the garage door going red to match the siding? Our 1740 saltbox is painted flat cottage red, EVERYTHING: windows, doors & siding but I actually like it. Good pic here: http://thatsmyletter.blogspot.com/2013/06/b-is-for-back-door-makeover.html
And your metal roof is to die for, absolutely love it. I want to live there.

I like white to be cohesive with the windows, but before I even saw your options I thought black would be great (maybe because currently I’m on a black kick?). But I do think the rendered black door looks good!

you know, when I first saw that you’d be asking about trim colors, I was already thinking gray….but then when I saw them, I changed my vote to white. it looks great with the red!

  41. Kristi says

    September 25, 2013 at 7:24 AM

I am usually a color girl, but in this case I am going with white. I love the crisp look of it next to the red. Its classic and you can’t mess with that. (Okay, maybe you can, but it sounded good.)

I say green door, white trim! like this: http://tapiture.com/image/barn-red-white-trim-and-win or this http://www.flickr.com/photos/29514985@N08/9423208709/ (but my view may influenced by the fact I spent the weekend in my mum’s attic reorganising my old Playmobil – which included a sweet pony farm in those colours!)

  43. K says

    September 25, 2013 at 7:05 AM

I’d go white – it looks classic against the classic red barn. I totally forgot that Ryan moved that thing! It looks much cuter in its current home. 🙂

  46. Kristen says

I think I prefer them as white, mostly because they really pop and keep the barn looking that bright red color 🙂

  48. Sarah says

Keep them white, too! It will be more consistent, and the white really pops against the red! Painting them gray would sort of minimize them, and your entrance should be obvious and cheerful, (imho).
It looks SO GREAT, Kim!!! You should be so proud!!!
