A big deck update

October 17, 2013 by Kim Woodward

I like big decks and I cannot lie.

Progress is being made in the barn front. While the upstairs apartment will be very small, Ryan and I decided to add a very large deck off the back. We kindly refer to this as the BIG DECK. It will essentially allow us to expand the living space. It’s also has an amazing view of our property and it’s a place we can hang out until we build a house.

Big Deck5

Ryan has built several decks in his days, but this is the largest and highest to-date. Thanks to the help of our friend Ian, Ryan got the frame up in a day. Since then, he’s gotten all the cedar decking boards down and will work on the stairs next. He’ll be installing a railing similar to our front porch and then making the support beams a little more sightly. Lots of work, but, oh, the rewards!Big Deck4

We can’t wait to get some seating and a grill out there.Big Deck3

And Ryan insists upon having a BIG DECK PARTY before the snow flies. I kindly reminded him that we have no – ahem – restroom facilities. But, Ryan insists the party must go on.

BYOTP (Bring your own toilet paper.)

So punny! (Wait, is that a pun? The big deck part?) Whatev, it’s funny is what it is. And I love the fact that stoic, quiet Ryan INSISTS on a bathroom-less BIG DECK party. It’s looking fantastic though!

We are totally in. I mean you have trees right? 😉 I cannot wait to see this space come together. It’s really exciting to me. Also I’m incredibly jealous you’ll be onsite full time while you build. What a luxury!

I somehow kinda forget about the barn/apartment/someday house and I love these little updates. I am always amazed at how handy Ryan is – you are a lucky woman!!! (I’m for hire and I come real cheap if you need a grill master or bartender that day 🙂 )

Wow–looks great! We are in need of a new deck and have decided we’re too wimpy to build it ourselves (it’s similarly high)….so whenever Ryan gets a chance, he can head on down here 😉

Bathroom shmathroom! It’s a barn party! And that deck is going to be awesome!

My friends, that are doing pretty much the same thing as you guys with the apartment and deck, are having their big barn party next weekend. We’ve been having parties on their land for years, but this will be the first one with the barn up. It rained last year so the barn will be nice if that happens again.

Holy smokes! Kudos to Ryan for building a deck so high off the ground. it looks awesome..and it’s the perfect party deck…but you might want to make sure there is a railing before the adult bevies come out 🙂

Ooo, the deck is so pretty.

I’ll borrow one of Henry’s diapers. We’re buds. He won’t mind.

I think Michelle is on to something here.

I’ll bring a Costco pack of TP, so we’ll have everyone covered, in case Henry isn’t feeling the whole sharing thing.

Whoa- that is a big deck. That will be awesome though, especially with a great view. And who needs restrooms when you have a bunch of property?? Just make everyone pretend like they’re camping 🙂

That’s awesome. Bring your own toilet paper and you can have a “cat hole” LOL never what that was until I googled it for different reasons.
    The deck looks great!
