A chalkboard door in the barn

January 26, 2015 by Kim Woodward

The last time we discussed the barn garage, it looked a little something like this.

If I’m being honest, it looked messier than this. Because. Duh. Real life. And then Christmas hit and the snow started and everything started piling up downstairs.

But this isn’t about the slippery slope of messiness.

There were still a few items on our to-do list, and one thing was to take care of that large barn door on the back. It needed to be insulated and finished, and I thought it would make the PERFECT CHALKBOARD.

Because, really, is there any surface that wouldn’t make the perfect chalkboard? (The answer is no.)

Ryan and Kyle insulated the door a few weeks ago and then took it a step further by framing the door with barn wood and adding a piece of smooth plywood in the middle. All I had to do was paint with chalkboard paint and I had a whole new artistic surface.Custom chalkboard barn door1

It’s amazing how such a small thing can make a big difference. I quickly “seasoned the board” with a quick layer of chalk. And then I created a simple little chalk monogram before snapping some quick pictures.Custom chalkboard barn door2

I love the barn wood trim. It looks like a huge, freestanding chalkboard now.Custom chalkboard barn door3
Henry and I have already had fun drawing on the chalkboard (which we used to do a lot with our old kitchen chalkboard).

Henry’s favorite game is to draw all of his “Facebook friends” with his dad. He names all of his friends and Ryan writes their names on his “Facebook wall.” It’s actually pretty hilarious since our 2-year-old has no idea what Facebook is. But he does have most of the characters from Thomas on his Facebook wall, so it’s not that far off my own Facebook page where I don’t really know most of the people there.

MMM I love me a good chalkboard door. I really miss having one actually. I’ve been trying to find the right place in our new house for it, and I’m having a really hard time figuring that out.
