Sprucing up the barn deck

June 26, 2014 by Kim Woodward

When there are a lot of pressing things to work on, I ignore those things and turn my sights to the pretty.

Insert – our barn patio. Otherwise known as the big deck. I knew that this space would become an important extension of our small living space and I became obsessed with prettying it up.

After we finished the railings and staining, I turned my sights to a little sprucing up. I put together this quick style board.

Barn patio

I still have a long way to go, but I love the first stage. I think the entire look hinges on this beautiful Mohawk Herringbone Indoor/Outdoor Rug. (Thanks to Mohawk for sending this beauty my way.)

I love the bold pattern. I love that it’s soft and comfortable to bare feet. I love that it will hold up to the outdoors with UV protected fibers. And I super love that Mohawk rugs are Made in America. I decided to pull in some red and aqua colors, which is perfect with the red barn and black and white rug.

I picked up the umbrella and pillows from World Market. I’m totally loving all the shade the umbrella provides.Mohawk rug chevron patio05

The dining set belonged to my in-laws and is really comfortable. I think there will be lots of al fresco dining in our future.

Will I ever get over this view? I don’t think so.

Henry also got this great new cedar picnic table from his grandma and grandpa. We also have a matching umbrella for this table, but haven’t installed it yet.Mohawk rug chevron patio04

And this basin is serving as a great spot to stash away pillows and the umbrellas while we aren’t there. (It’s super windy out here, so this should help to keep track of everything.) I have big plans for this area in the future, too.Basin1

I still have lots of projects on the horizon for this space, but it’s on its way. Thanks in part to this gorgeous rug.

Call me a child of the 70’s but I am longing a shag rug for our concrete living room floor. I don’t have a deck and only large gravel in our pitifully small backyard. A rug would not hold up there. No plans to change it as we don’t own it. (renting) I saw this Crimson colored Frise Shag Rug on Home Depot Mohawk collection that would bring some life and comfort to our drab, hard, floor! Hope to win this!

I LOVE your deck décor! The rug anchors the deck and banisters, the red pulls in your barn color and the aqua makes it all POP 🙂 The metal container to handle all of it is a wonderful idea too. The preschool teacher in me is nervous about the placement of Henry’s table! Hopefully it is next to the rail for pictures. I can see that active little one up and over the side – yikes! On that note, enjoy that wonderful view. As a transplanted Michigander to SoCA, It always amazes me that I forget how the GREEN it really is in the Midwest!

      June 26, 2014 at 9:16 PM

I actually have some other chairs that I’m planning to paint aqua. These will stay black. Mostly out of laziness but also because I think they’ll hold up to the elements better. They will actually go under the deck, but I included them because I see it all as one big space.

Kim! You are going to get so much use out of this spot. I love it – out here we would call that a rooftop patio – and there’s nothing Denverites like more than rooftop patios. B makes a mean margarita, we’ll be right over. As for the rug giveaway – there’s a confetti rug that I have my eye on for the playroom, this would make my day!

    • Kim Woodward says

      June 26, 2014 at 9:18 PM

Mmmmm…. margaritas. How about you wait to visit until our house is built and you can just stay in the barn for as long as you want (FOREVER?). Margaritas for life on the rooftop patio.

Love the color scheme – it’s the same as my living room. 🙂 I’ve been fighting the urge to do a lot of “prettying” in my back yard because we rent and are hoping we won’t be here next summer…but seeing this makes me wonder if I can’t just add at least a bright umbrella to our picnic table to make it a bit more cozy. *opens new tab to browse World Market site*

KIM. I LOVE THIS. I’ve never had success with outdoor rugs. Testaments as to how this has been holding up in the elements? Are you planning on bringing it indoors in stretches of bad weather/winter?

    • Kim Woodward says

      June 26, 2014 at 9:22 PM

This is an interesting question. We have a huge rug on our front porch that I’ve never brought in (including the past three winters in the Midwest) and it’s holding up fine. But it’s covered and I’ve never had anything like this before. I’m interested to see what the official stance on this is so I’m going to check. Because I want it to last a long time.
