The grape vines

August 12, 2013 by Kim Woodward

So, no garden this year in Woodwardville. Too much going on and too many projects to complete for our house and the property. Didn’t need something else to add to the list. Plus, our backyard at our house gets very little sun so most vegetables haven’t grown well for the past few years. (Nothing like the crazy awesome garden at our first home. Sigh. I miss that backyard.)

But, I’ll tell you what is growing in our  current backyard – GRAPES! And lots of them.

Grapes4

It’s out of control.

A friend didn’t want these grapevines in his backyard, so Ryan planted them on the side of our garage.

And they’ve gone INSANE. They sort of look overgrown, but I don’t even care. They actually give our backyard a little more privacy and cover some of the chain link fence. (Most of the yard is fenced in a wood shadowbox style, but the areas that already had chain link stayed. They aren’t visible from the street anyhow.)

I asked Ryan if he did anything special. He said that he planted them and then let nature do her thing. I also have no idea what type of grapes they are. We are in a zone 5, if you are interested, so not exactly wine country. 😉

All this bounty means Ryan has been harvesting a big bowl of grapes every few nights. Grapes are coming out of our ears.

Seriously, how pretty are they?

Pretty, and tasty, too. This is the fun part of gardening that I really miss this year – the excitement of harvesting and eating something we planted. Love that.
We’ll be back in the garden saddle next year. That’s a promise.
Until then, we eat grapes.

How are your gardens doing this year?

Awesome grapes!! I’m waiting to see what cool things you make with all of them… Jelly? Wine?! 😉 Our garden has done pretty well this year except for the tomatoes. We’ve had squash, broccoli, chard, carrots, onions, watermelons, cucumbers, and strawberries but the tomatoes have been lousy. Oh well right?! 😉

Ooh, yum! I’d love to grow grapes but I always had this idea in my head that it’s so hard. Maybe next year 🙂

Woo! How exciting! I wanted to plant some vines but my husband started throwing around words like “nuts” and “taking on too much” because I was also planting a bunch of other stuff for the first time. Next year I will get them!

Ps – parts of zone 5 are wonderful for wine! I live in Michigan, and our wine industry is seriously hot right now. And it’s pretty easy to make on your own if you ever feel like it. I made it in a botany class once. 🙂

Grapes are one of those things I just assume real people can’t grow. Once again proven wrong by the Woodwards. Not that you and Ryan are real – you’re like super human versions of real people. I want to eat these. Are Woodward Vineyards next on the project list? Sign me up for a case of your first production 🙂

Ooh! Way to go Ryan! Those are growing great! Our garden didn’t fare so well this year (it suffered the wrath of puppies).

You should can some jelly! Homemade grape jelly is THE BEST THING EVER. Just sayin’.

Mmmm… those grapes look like Concord Grapes. If they look like they’ll all be a dark purple when ripe.. and they kind of “crunch” a little when you bite them… yum! My favorite kinds!!!

How many grape recipes can you find??? 😀

Those grapes look great. A neighbor of mine used to grow them and I thought it was so exotic when I was little.
Mine garden started out strong but turned out the soil is lacing some nutrients so I didn’t get much. Going to try and add some more compost and see if next year turns out better.

I’m going to steal your grapes now. Mwah haha. Wait, that seems like work. Scratch that. I’m impressed at how well they are doing!

That is awesome! I’ve never tried to grow grapes but I kind of adore partially-overgrown-looking vines. Always seems so romantic!

Mmmmm… Those grapes look awesome! My grandparents always had grapevines at their old house and I LOVED climbing around on the garage harvesting them with my grandfather.

None of my plants have ripened yet this year. They are in the process though, so soon I’ll have a few kinds of maters and some banana and bell peppers. Yay!
