I know Easter bunnies typically bring chocolate bunnies and plastic eggs. My Easter bunny is better.
Okay, actually, my in-laws brought me the sofa and rug on Easter. So, yeah. You wish you had my in-laws.
The background – I had been saving my pennies for a more neutral sectional for our living room since the first of the year. I thought it would be more my style and would also provide more seating for the living room. While the living room is pretty big, only about half of it is actually usable because of the front door and the fireplace and windows. I thought a sectional would get the most bang for my layout bucks.
And due to the fact that I’m insane, it started to take over my thoughts. I was spending quite a bit of time searching and shopping and thinking about it.
I had looked at several furniture stores, even making the trip to West Elm, and I learned that I had pretty expensive taste. Then, like manna from heaven (yes, I just compared a sofa to a biblical reference), my mother-in-law texted me from American and asked if I would be interested in their sofa.
You know, the sofa that is pretty much exactly what I wanted.
Twist. My. Arm.
My in-laws are sort of the most generous people on the planet. Add that with a penchant for buying new furniture and it’s a perfect storm. For their daughter-in-law.
I also stole their rug. And by stole – I mean, did them a favor by taking off their hands. (They had 6 rugs that were sitting in a back room. Total favor.) And, bam. My living room transformed.
In truth, I really liked the red sofa, too. (Which, coincidentally, was also a hand-me-down from my in-laws. Yes. Ridiculously spoiled over here. And no, you cannot have them.) It was very nice and I liked the unique look of the red.
But now? I think the new sofa is better for the room. It’s also ridiculously comfortable, shows less dog hair and fits lots more people than the past setup. The guitar has now moved back to the living room, which complicates things. But, I just threw a pretty table cloth over the electric amp and I sort of don’t hate it.
That’s the new rug, too. Ryan thinks a rug on a rug is crazy. And, it probably is. But I really like how it looks. Now, I’d like to paint the end table and the ceramic stool. Because, obviously, I couldn’t just be happy the way it was. What sort of DIY blogger would I be to just leave things alone?
What do you think of our new (to us) sofa?

I also like your window coverings. Will u describe them for me? Can’t quite make out from the photo what u have there.

They are bamboo shades from JCPenney. I LOVE the looks of them but HATE the function. They are always lopsided. Ugh.

Oh, how I wish we could have a sectional. Your in-laws are the best, lucky girl!
FRECKLES CHICK says
All my in-laws ever give me is unwanted advice, damn.
It’s perfect! Like it was made for your LR. Sectionals are so key for a family, best concept ever.
Sara @ Russet Street Reno says
OMG Freckles, you crack me up!
Chelsea @ two twenty one says
Love it! I want in-laws who give me old, but still new looking furniture. You definitely hit the jackpot, Woodward. I love how it’s a great neutral color so you can add pops of color with throw pillows.
Krista @thehappyhousie says
I love the new sectional! I want to do a little sofa switcheroo myself, with one we have in the basement but it is still under ‘negotiation’ round here. Total snowball though… once you change that then the tables are next… then… what else? But that is what makes it fun, right?

Sweet inlaws are the best! I’m a spoiled daughter-in-law, too! I think the sectional looks perfect in your space!

Lucky you! We’re in the market for a sectional for our new house, and my Ryan has some sticker shock and is wishing for a hand-me-down that isn’t happening.
And don’t you know that decorating is never over? As soon as we think a room is done, something somewhere needs a new color.
Trina @ Let's Just Build a House says
well if your in laws have anything else they want to get rid of send it down here to southern illinois because i love me some hand me down furniture.
but in reality, that is VERY generous of them. and it works perfectly in that room. id paint the stool too!! what about something with the blue to match the rug? not all blue but…some blue..idk
Kelly @ Corner of Main says
Definitely some great in-laws! The sofa looks perfect and extra comfy!
Ash @ HumberHomeProject says
I’d say I’m jealous of your in-laws, but we’re currently on our second hand me down couch from Bob’s parents, too ๐ haha
But I am jealous that you have a sectional – those are my favorite, just so inviting! This makes your living room seem a lot more open and brighter, too.
Hooray for in-laws that hoard couches! We married into the right kind of families ๐
jen@homeinthecountry says
It looks fantastic, Kim!
I really love that blue rug, and you can pull off the rug-on-a-rug look well!
Can you send the Easter Bunny a message that I’d like a couch, too? Sitting in the hubs’ butt grooves in our cheap old futon just aren’t really cutting it anymore.
Christine @ Casa-de-Christine says
Love the new sectional! It fits the room perfectly! Best inlaws EVER! Shayne would have a hard time with the rug on rug thing too…. it’s brilliant but it must be too advanced for the mere male species ; ) haha

That sofa is AMAZING!!! I want a very similar sofa for “man town”
One day. When we stop having to buy annoyingly necessary things like heat pumps… ๐

Lucky duck! Can I please have your in-laws? Just for like my birthday or another gift giving holiday? Pleeeease?!
I seriously do love the sectional though! I’ve got my eyes on one for our living room too. I’ve also been trying to convince Jesse to let me rug on rug our living room too!
Kayla aka Kilo Bravo says
I personally love rugs on top of rugs. Or TVs on top of TVs (an old joke from high school that I was reminded of when I read this post that isn’t worth explaining). Love the new look!
Kristen | Popcorn on the Stove says
I’m so jealous! We’ve been living with our current sofa for 2.5 years and I am not crazy about it (to be honest, I never actually was) but we figure we’ll buy a nice sectional once we get a house.
I have a terrible feeling I’m going to go crazy and buy a bold-colored sofa.
Rachel says
It looks fantastic! I love how it gives your room a more subtle, cool look, and it looks like the perfect shape for the room. And the rug is perfect, too! Everything looks great.
Amy@BR says
I think you’re the luckiest daughter in law ever! It looks great, and fits perfectly. A rug on top of a rug is genius! Men…

Love the new sofa! It looks great, I would LOVE to get one similar…not going to happen for a loooong time, but a girl can dream.
Also – I make my husband keep his amp in our closet. There isnt a lot that I ‘make’ him do, but that thing is not allowed in the living room. Its a big one…and yeah…NO.
Cindy @ The Flipping Couple says
Dang. You won the inlaw lottery. I love that sofa!! And I really do love how it transforms the room.
Mary-Carolyn says
I love it! We have a sort-of-sectional, and I think it really works, especially in layouts where there are multiple focal points/thing you want to look at.
cassie says

Emily L. says
I love the new sofa! It looks perfect in your living room.

Score! I hope you pay-it-forward and donate the old sofa to some needy soul. Can you look into cloning your in-laws?
Katie says
Love it. It really changes the style of your living room. It also looks comfortable and not too fussy, which is one of my preferences when discussing sofas.
