I recently put together a little baby gift for Sarah, my friend from Five Camels. Now that she’s received it, I want to share.
I think the fabrics in the Bliss line by Moda would be perfect for a little girl. (If I were having a girl, these fabrics would be all over the nursery.) So, I put together a few bibs and a play mat/quilt.
I was quite smitten with the result.
These are pretty much my favorite fabrics, so I had them on-hand. I used the free pattern for bibs at Purl Bee. I used Velcro instead of snaps, since that’s what I had. I lined them with organic terry cloth from fabric.com
The quilt is 36×36 and I think it will make a wonderful play mat, with all the coordinating colors and patterns. It is a panel I picked up at the fabric store ages ago and has been waiting for the right project. I think this was it.
The backing is a Bliss for Moda dot I had in my stash.
I wanted to try free motion quilting on this, and I think it turned out pretty well.
I hope Sarah likes the gifts as much as I do. I usually try to make things that I love, but it also makes it harder to give them away.
But in this case, I’m just hopeful that the gifts can be useful for a precious little baby girl.
What do you think?

I hope that you will have time to make me baby gifts when I finally get pregnant since my sewing skills are non-existent! Love all your quilts so much!!!

I barely want to make things for my own kid, and you’re making things for others! You are super woman. And, that is beautiful.

It really turned out beautifully! It’s such a sweet combination of fabrics and colors. I may have to look into this panel quilting business. Sounds like my kind of quilting ;).
I love the free motion quilting. I now have to google it so I can try it out sometime.
Sarah really loved the quilt and was absolutely blown away that you made it for Katherine. But you know who loved the quilt even more? Joseph. He tried to steal it at one point during the shower. He walked around hugging it because it was WAY past his usual naptime. ๐

It really is the most beautiful quilt and I LOVE the quilting that you used. Katherine is SO TOTALLY SPOILED. I didn’t have a play mat, and you’re right it will be PERFECT for that!!!
If I get to do another girly nursery one day, I’d TOTALLY use these fabrics. They’re absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much, Kim!!! ๐

I love everything about this!! The fabric, the colors, the bibs, the circle quilt!!! Stunning!! And from a fellow quilter, because I know how much this means, my first thought was, “Holy crap, her squares are so sraight!”
Kim @ NewlyWoodwards says
I feel like I’ve tricked you all – the “quilt” is a panel, meaning it already was printed to look like a quilt. I only had to quilt it and bind it. The quilting tricks you into thinking I pieced the top. Hope this helps!

How do you find all this time to make such wonderful quilt treasures! I love that you changed it up and went free motion. Was it tough? Did you stencil out your design before getting started?
Proud of you, girlfriend!
Much Love –
