I feel like I have a Monday hangover – the kind that happen after an incredibly awesome weekend. The kind of weekend you wish were every weekend. Friends and sunshine and birthday cake and yummy food and late nights and drinks.
But, it’s Monday and we are back to reality. And reality is okay, too.
I’ve been thinking a lot about our master bedroom lately. We’ve been making our way through all the boxes in storage and I’ve been picking up a few items here and there for the space. But mostly, we’re trying to keep from buying anything major and sticking with what we have.
I actually really liked our space in the last house – and I ended up painting our walls the exact same color in the new house. I hope that the feel will be really similar – because it works for us.
But, there are a few things I feel like our new room NEEDS right away. Because I don’t know about you – but I want our master bedroom to feel sort of put together – even if we’ll eventually do more work down the line. (I know that bedrooms often get overlooked at first. But I want our bedrooms to at least feel like home and not just a dumping ground. It makes me feel more settled.)
So here are the things I want to add to our bedroom when we move in. By focusing on just a few things, it keeps it manageable and affordable.
Lighting
From the moment we began planning the master, I knew I wanted wall-mounted fixtures. I love the look of lamps on the wall. Plus, they just feel more practical. I like having space on the end tables and lamps always seem to leave less space for the other junk I need at arm’s reach.
I sold the two lamps in a yard sale, and I chose these fixtures from Amazon. I hope they have a similar feel to the swing-arm versions in my inspiration. (The dreamiest bedroom of all time.)

Window treatments
I can’t sleep in a room without window treatments. Since we left all our curtains with the seller in our last house, we’re back to square one. I think some simple white window panels will do the trick.
The windows are right behind the bed, so I think that natural linen or light color will work well. I love this space as an inspiration.

Quilt
I really wanted to bring some more color and pattern into the space. When we were visiting Ryan’s Aunt Joanell last summer in Tennessee, I was inspired by her bedding in all her rooms – she did a wonderful job of layering comforters, blankets and quilts and mixing different patterns.
I actually really like our tan pin tucked comforter and I wanted to keep the orange in the room, too. But I’ve been keeping my eyes open for a really vibrant quilt that I could bring into the space. I think this Mudhut quilt from Target will fit the bill perfectly. It’s really bright, but I love all the colors and the pattern.
Shelves
I recently read this article about feng shui and attracting love and money – and a few points were specifically about the master bedroom.
I wouldn’t say that I’m a die-hard for feng shui tips, but these two resonated with me (I’m paraphrasing):
- Keep the bedroom cozy – if the room gets too large, it’s easy to live apart.
- Focus on the couple – include artwork and photos of the couple only in the bedroom.
Both of these tips are supposed to increase the love in your life. And who am I to argue?
I always like to include our wedding photos and other mementos, but I want do a better job of this in our new space. I plan to install a few simple shelves to have space for these items. Plus, it makes it simpler to rearrange the artwork and photographs overtime. These shallow versions from Bower Power are a great option that don’t suck up too much space in a smaller room.

So, those are the four things I’m focusing on up front to get our master bedroom in order.
What would your four things be for your bedroom?

Oh I am all about feng shui when I decorate. I always shy away from something that is too pointy or prickly and I love to have two of things here and there to create a ‘partner’ vibe. I also place the bed in the power position: So that you can see the door clearly from the bed and using a headboard is also very important. 😀 I got some swing arm lamps for my next bedroom too.

I never considered myself much of a “feng shui person” (if that’s a thing). But as I read the ideas, they all made sense and I think I integrate them into my decor without realizing it. Which tells me there may be something to it, if it feels natural.

Yup I agree. That quilt is amazing. Picking all this stuff must be so much fun.

Fun, besides the whole “we are so out of money” thing. 😉

I’m happy you think so – I’m worried about all the mixing patterns, but I do love this quilt. I always admire how well you mix colors/patterns/etc., so I’m taking your word as law. 😉
