Did you know that the basement of our new house is larger than our entire current apartment?
Yeah. I couldn’t let that space go unused – even if we aren’t in the house yet. It’s officially a makeshift playroom, and we are digging it.
This isn’t a perfectly styled space, but you’ll forgive that, right? (Let’s get real. You wouldn’t come HERE for perfectly-styled spaces. Moving on.)
And there are several reasons this space totally rocks:
- It’s HUGE. At least in the sense that it’s way larger than our entire living space currently. So many of Henry’s toys had just been in boxes or taking up too much space in the garage. No more!
- The basement is fully exposed – which means a lot of giant windows and tons of natural light.
- The space is totally insulation – so it stays nice and warm. (Or cool.)
- The FLOORS ARE HEATED! I mean, really. This is worthy of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.
This space may not be perfect, but it’s full of fun for my preschooler.
I hung up the train backdrop to cover the future bathroom area. I also brought over the outdoor rug from our deck for the space – which is easy to keep clean and is a little softer that concrete.
Then, all the toys came over in wagons. It was a very advanced affair. Because Henry has too many toys. We even brought over his train table, although I think Henry is officially out of the train stage. (SOB! WHERE HAS MY BABY GONE?)
Currently, he refuses to be down here by himself (while I paint upstairs) but he does love to show it off to everyone and spend time with us down there. I’m just glad that all his toys are in one place and I’m not tripping on them in the middle of the night.
And we also just bought a (second-hand) bounce house for some energy burning. Because at this point, WHY SHOULD WE NOT HAVE A BOUNCE HOUSE? We have every other toy that exists.o,k
And Ryan loves the bounce house as much as Henry.
In case you are wondering, the answer is yes. There are more toys.
Henry styled these shelves for you. He’s got a real feel for shelfies.

Oh my gosh, I want your basement for a photo studio! I am so jealous of you!! It looks wonderful, styled or not.

A) If this space were “styled” what would be the point since if Henry is anything like my kids it would be a mess 5 minutes later? Good for you for not even bothering to go there. I love real!
B) HOORAY!!! for basements and places to spread out. And heated floors!

I totally get changes in sq ft.! We were living in a TINY studio in downtown San Francisco — and now have an old fox-hunting lodge + two acres. Space still seems so coveted though, so we are trying to maximize it all! 🙂 I love that chevron rug, btw.

Color me envious! I’ve been fantasizing about turning our dining room into a playroom…
Also, over trains?? No WAY!! Sounds like you just need to pack ’em up and hide them awhile. 🙂
