Thank you so much for all your encouragement and kindness last week after we shared our big announcement. We’ve been blogging for almost 9 years and even after all this time, I was reminded again how wonderful it is to have a tribe of friends all over the world. Lucky us!
I thought I’d swing back around to share how to organize a small closet on a budget. The closet in the baby’s room is tiny so I wanted to be sure we were able to get the maximum amount of storage in a tiny space.
When I say tiny, I mean TI-NY.
The closet is tucked into the eaves, which means we lose quite a bit of head room and much of the closet isn’t super easy to access. But that doesn’t stop us from making the most of the space – with plenty of extra space for all the gear that seems to be multiplying.

And we did it on a small budget – because, why spend money on a fancy closet system when I can use that money to buy all the cute girl clothes?
HOW TO ORGANIZE A SMALL CLOSET ON A BUDGET
I think these solutions would work well for almost any closet – not just for kids. You’ll just need to adjust the heights accordingly for hanging. And it makes such a huge difference to have plenty of closet space. I couldn’t believe how much space this provided by making the most of the vertical space.
I started by using the floor space – with kids, this is a great spot to put items that you want kids to have easy access. Instead of building something custom, we chose to purchase an 8-cube organizer. This is a perfect way to store toys, gear and books where kids can reach (and even put away). It also meant I didn’t have to paint it, which was a bonus.
My favorite part? There’s actually extra room in these cubes for more stuff.
As an aside, don’t be like me and forget about how you are actually going to fit this piece into a small space. I realized after starting assembly that I was going to have to assemble the cubes INSIDE the tiny closet because it wouldn’t slide in after assembly.
This may sound easy until I realized that there was no way on Earth this belly was going to fit inside said closet.
Thank goodness my husband came to the rescue for the last few bolts. I don’t recommend this to viewers at home.
But in the end, we had a great amount of storage in an area that normally goes unused.
As we moved up the wall, I simply wanted to maximize the storage for things I would need to access. My dad graciously offered to hang the shelves and rod, since my husband recently broke five ribs. (That’s a whole other story, my friends. Being 9 months pregnant when your husband breaks five ribs is quite an experience.)
We started with a simple hanging rod (and cheapo brackets from Menards). Then, we had room for a second shelf above – perfect for all the momma stuff that I’ve accumulated – wraps and diaper bags and pumps and more.
In the end, we spent just over $100 in closet supplies and had a wonderful, organized space for baby gear. With room to grow.
I was able to use baskets and bins I already had – to corral toys and clothes and blankets. I’d love to add more baskets above, but that would mean cutting back on buying all the girl clothes.
Not happening.
In other news – I added this adorable piece to the door. I purchased it from a local vendor – and it’s the cutest accessory for the closet while it’s closed.
You’d never know all the storage that’s packed behind this cute little door. It’s amazing how easy it is to organize a small closet on a budget when you think outside the box! (er, closet)
Here are a few of the sources for my favorite pieces (some affiliate links):
8 cube organizer | Shelves and brackets (Menards) | Dresser (Ugly Duckling, local) | Changing pad cover | Antlers (Things with Wings)
If you like it, put a pin on it.

Adorable! I need to do this with our pantry closet! We have a prefab, so all of our storage closets are like this. Luckily our clothes closets are larger 🙂
