Looking for a fun and simple craft to spruce up your late-summer porch?
Try this customizable cinder block planter. It’s a quick and easy pick-me-up for your end-of-summer porch.
I actually started this project at craft night, and it was a great and easy project for a group. You start with a simple cinder block from the hardware store (this is an 8x8x8 inch version for around $1).
You can paint it as you wish – I used white and red exterior paint to create a striped look and then finished it off with some simple flower stencils.
You don’t need to paint the entire inside – I just painted where you could see.
Once the paint is dry, you’ll need wire mesh and landscape fabric – I had both on hand from past projects.
Simply cut a square of wire mesh or chicken wire. Then bend and fold it to create a little bowl for inside the cinder block.
Then, cut a larger square piece of landscape fabric and tuck it around the wire. I made sure to tuck it around the sides to avoid being poked by wire. This becomes the perfect spot for your plants.
You can plant any small plant inside – I chose to transplant a few succulents into soil. (It doesn’t take much soil – it’s a pretty small space).
If you are anything like me, you have a mess to clean up after completing a DIY project. I tend to do most projects in the dining room – and I ended up with some soil and grime on the carpet.
So, I also took a few minutes to clean the carpet with Spot Shot®Instant Carpet Stain Remover. I did a quick vacuum and then applied the stain remover to the stains, let stand for about 60 seconds, and then wiped it off with a clean white towel. After a bit, I cleaned it well with cold water.

I went ahead and cleaned a few other spots in the dining room from food and ghosts of crafts past.
I figure it’s easier to do it all at once.
In the end – I had a clean dining room carpet AND an adorable new pot for the front porch.
I took down most of our patriotic decor, so this was a good way to give the porch a little pick-me-up before fall hits. (It’s been cooler here, so it doesn’t seem like it’s too far away.)
