Today is an extra fun day. Because a few of the Behr DIY Experts (myself included) are sharing fun projects featuring colors using the Behr 2015 Color Trends.
These are projects using some of the coolest and on-trend colors for 2015.
Each of us all tackling projects on our to-do list – getting a head start on this year’s DIY Resolutions.
My project was all about tackling and adding some function and form to our living room built-ins. If you remember, Ryan built these drawers and shelves into the wall to get us tons of added storage. This serves as our entertainment area and also the majority of our storage for clothes.
The shelves had great bones, but needed something for a little extra oomph. So my brother and Ryan started by adding shelves to the open uppers using plywood and pine boards.
They look “chunky” from the front, but it’s really just a mirage.
Then, I needed some drama – perfect for a new paint color. I chose Behr Seared Gray from the 2015 Color Trends Palette. (Find all the colors online or pick up your own brochure at Home Depot like I did.)
I chose Seared Gray – a deep, moody gray-blue. It looks almost teal in some lights, almost black in some lights, almost navy in some lights, almost slate in some lights. I love it so hard. I had it tinted in MARQUEE, and away I went.
I kept the fronts of the new open shelves the same color as the walls/drawers (Behr Dolphin Fin).
Then I painted the inside of the shelves in Seared Gray.
Here’s the transformation …
It really goes great with everything in the space – the wall color, the dark hardware, the barnwood walls and the new curtains.
On the shelves, I added some poly for a bit of durability. And then I (im)patiently waited to add some things to the shelves. Most of our decorative items are in storage, but I found just enough “stuff” to be pretty and practical.
The chalkboard box is perfect for magazines and books.
And the pretty artwork above (a sweet gift from my friend Michelle at Making Our Dream) is in front of a small basket that hides all our remotes and small gadgets.
On the opposite side, I used another basket to hide away our DVDs and games.
I added the (faux, of course) plants to the front of the box. Because it’s prettier. But mostly because my son likes to get all the DVDs out and spread them all over the floor.
On the top shelf, I was able to store some of my jewelry, which makes it easily accessible to me and out of Henry’s reach. I’m also thinking about adding some hooks below to hang necklaces. (Do you spy Ryan’s high school ring? Love.)
I think it’s a pretty great transformation – from blah to WOW. Just a little paint can make a huge difference, right?

Wow! Everything you do turns into magic! I wish I had that ability to go for it. I bought cheapie end tables but I am afraid I will screw up. How do you research the project and tackle it? How do you choose the right color? I can never decide if it should match or be a complementary color! Please post suggestions for folks like me. Thanks!

These are great questions – my philosophy is that it’s just paint and can always be painted again. For that reason, I tend to paint willy nilly. I just go with my gut and then go for it. I have only had two rooms in three houses that I had to repaint.
Another good option is to get a few sample pots of paint to see the color in your space. As for what color to choose, try checking out some of your favorite images on pinterest and find complementary colors from there. Good luck! Hope this helps!

That is such an amazing color! Now I’m itching to paint stuff…

You have the best style! I love the color you chose, it adds so much interest to that space. But what I’m really drooling over is that door. OMG I’m in LOVE! You guys are seriously awesome! I want to talk Justin into making one for us in our next house. 🙂

This looks awesome, Kim! Such a little change that makes a HUGE impact. I never in a million years would have thought to do it, but it looks amazing.
emily @ go haus go says
Love this so much! I like how the color you chose coordinates with the TV too…. it all looks perfect together!
Kim Woodward says
I was really happy with how it makes the tv blend a little more. Because it’s such a small space, the television looks GINORMOUS (even though it’s not). Hoping the shelves help a little bit.

Wow what a difference that pop of colour made with the extra shelves!
Gretchen says

Trina @ Let's Just Build a House says
the paint REALLY made a difference! love the new look.
Michelle says
I love it! It’s always amazing what a difference a coat of paint can make. I have old Ikea Billy bookcases in a room that we’re working on. It’s sort of the overflow room of furniture we had in our apartment but we didn’t want in the main living area of our new house. Can’t decide if they’re worth keeping, or if we should just save up/start fresh with new furniture. But this has me thinking that it might be worth a coat of paint on the inside just to see if it helps!
Kim Woodward says
Paint’s definitely a great option. I’ve also seen some amazing projects turning Billy Bookcases into built-ins.
Antonella @ Love Your Home says

Bam! That looks awesome, such a difference with a small project.
Kim Woodward says
Bam, indeed, friend.
Robin says
What a WOW project indeed Kim! I love the color …really the entire wall unit is beautiful (and Dolphin Fin is all over my house 🙂 ) xoox
Kim Woodward says
Thanks, Robin! I’m pretty obsessed with Dolphin Fin. It’s much lighter and brighter than what I had in my last house and it truly goes with everything. I think I’ll do our house in that, too, because I like it so well.
Christine says
Oh my gosh! Adding the shelves and painting the inside in BEHR’s Seared Gray gave the built-in unit a whole new look. Your hubby, brother, BEHR, and you make a great team! Way to go! 🙂
Kim Woodward says
Thanks, Christine! I’m truly amazed at how some shelves and paint can transform a small space.
