Quilting with half-square triangles is my favorite. I love that you can make so many different types of quilts with the same block. And the blocks come together so simple. And it’s a perfect type of block for solids, I think. In other words – perfect for a lazy quilter like me.
(Check out my half-square triangle versions of the pinwheel, chevron, zig zag, table runner and more complex block.)
And today I’m sharing another half-square quilt – this one ended up as a herringbone pattern and I lurrrrrve it. I was inspired by this pair of twin herringbone quilts at Persia Lou. But I made it using my dimensions. I used graph paper to plot it out. I ended up with 6 inch blocks made into half-square triangles using this method. The final quilt is 7 blocks wide by 8 blocks long – a good sized baby quilt.
It’s just a quick layout swap from the chevron version, but this graphic version is so unique and fun. And, I think, more unique. (It also makes you dizzy if you stare at it too long, which I believe is the sign of a good quilt.)
I used Kona solids to piece the front and a dot for the binding and backing. I finished the quilt with straight quilting lines.
Poor Henry thinks the quilt is his. Look at this grin. It actually goes perfectly with his room so I don’t blame him. But since he has approximately a dozen quilts in his room, I think he’ll be okay without this one.
So Henry-man helped me pack it up and send it off to its new home – that of my lovely friend Lyndsay at That 70s House. Her sweet boy’s new room actually has an insanely awesome herringbone wall. I hope that this quilt fits there, too.
What do you think of the newest quilt?

I love this quilt! I’m going to try to make something like it for my boys rooms. But the link for how you did the the half square triangle isn’t working for me for some reason! What website had the tutorial for that? Thank you!

6 inches, I think? It’s been a while, but that’s my recollection.

About how many yards of each fabric did you use? I really love this quilt! Thanks for sharing!
Kim Woodward says
It was about a yard of each the blue and white and 2 yards of the backing and binding. Good luck!

I love it! I keep toying with the idea of learning to quilt, but Im actually nervous. My sewing skills need some work.
Kim Woodward says
Quilting is seriously just straight lines. Take the plunge, it’s a wonderful accomplishment to finish a quilt and it’s very doable. I actually had no idea how to sew when I first took a quilting class. I’m backwards like that.
