True board and batten barn siding (Barn raising progress)

August 20, 2013 by Kim Woodward

Oh my  word, this barn is looking so gooooooooo-oooood.

Who loves barn siding? Kim loves barn siding.

I do, I do, I do, I do, I do-ooooo. (That’s a Kenan and Kel throw-back.)

The board and batten siding is almost complete. The siding is a mixture of the original barn siding and some new lumber. It is not an easy job because with an old barn like this, every single piece of wood is a custom cut.  And it’s hotter than blazes out there. It’s gotta be 15 degrees hotter on this hill than it is at our house 30 minutes away. It’s insanity.

But oh, it’s worth it.

To keep the feel of the original barn, we went with board and batten siding. We’ll stain it barn red as soon as our stain arrives. Is there any other appropriate color for a barn? The answer is no, according to my husband.board and batten august 20133

Here’s a little more detail of the siding.

We also have all the windows ready to paint. There are always more projects than there is time. Can I get an amen?board and batten august 20135

But for now, we just admire that pretty siding. It’s been a long time coming.board and batten august 20136

You may have noticed the windows and doors in the loft level. That’s our other big news. We’re actually converting the upstairs of the barn into an apartment for us to live in while we build our house! I’ll be sharing more pictures and info about this tomorrow, so stop back for the full 4-1-1.

I look at this, and all I can think of is Clark Kent’s barn loft from Smallville.

Make no mistake, that is not a bad thing. Especially if you happen upon a nekked Tom Welling during the building process. (if you do.. .call me. Stat).

    Looks great Kim!!!

My sister lived in her shop while she built. It has to be better than moving back in with your parents! 🙂 It will be super helpful to be close to the build though. I think it’s a great idea, and you’ll be glad you are so close once the new house starts going up!

This is SO exciting! I hope you plan to share the plans for the house build. I can’t wait to see the progress. Will you plan to rent out the barn apartment after you move into the house? Need a renter ;)?
