Back in 2009, we got creative by adding tin can flower pots on the fence. It was a wonderful way to add color to the landscape on a budget. After four years, it was time to hit them with a new coat of spray paint and I thought I’d revisit this project in case you missed it the first time around.
These cans started their lives in a Dairy Queen. No greater calling, I say. My aunt gave them to me and I sprayed them with red gloss paint. Ryan added metal wire to hang them from the fence. Bing. Bang. Boom.
I’m sure I’ll be getting some sort of reward for this tutorial.
My only regret is not asking for more cans. I could cover the world in tin can flower pots.
After touching them up this year, I planted impatiens. And these beautiful tin can pots live on.
I love impatiens. In three weeks, they go from …
to …
No one buys the impatiens when they were green and flowerless. They can’t look past the boring leaves. A coworker has a flower farm and brought me the impatiens to plant. Which was great, but I didn’t know what color I was getting until they bloomed. It was sort of a fun surprise.
These flower pots are a great way to reuse and recycle.ย I think it would also be fun with small tin cans.

Now I have to go thru our recycling and get out our tin cans ๐ Thanks for the idea. I’ve been looking for cheap container ideas for my flowers this year.

They look great.I can’t wait to try it to help disguise the ugly fence we have. Did you drill holes in the bottom for drainage?

What fun! I hope your cans turn out great!

Can you tell me how you did the wiring? I’m worried if I don’t get it right that the weight of the pot will be too much. I love this idea and definitely want tho use it! Thanks!

Kathy – From what I remember, we just drilled holes through the back about 6-8 inches apart. Then, we just ran wire. We’ve had them for five years and they are still in perfect condition. Not a single one has broken or anything. I did have to repaint them once.

Love these!! Cute way to spruce up the fence for sure ๐ I LOVE growing Dahlias and poppies in our garden. I’m itching to plant some bougainvillea too — just gotta get the husband on board with it since he takes care of the yard and he isn’t a fan of things that like to climb and need taming! ๐

I love using cans, only I’ve never painted them. Sure wish we had a fence to hang them on!
One of my favorites are shasta daisies.

I love impatiens! My grandmother used to Miracle Grow hers twice a week and they’d get HUGE!
It’s too hot for them in Dallas though. Down here, I love lantana. The hotter it gets, the better it does.
