Ryan has a really good group of friends from way back. I love that guys can make friendships that truly last forever. (Girls can make lifetime friends, too. But it seems to be a male phenomenon to make friends in childhood that stay tight into old age. I fear that women let other things get in the way – family, jobs, house, drama โฆ anyhow, that’s a whole other post.)
Boys. They have no drama. Or at least, very little drama. This is the best photo that I could find of the three stooges buddies – from Brian and Jessi’s wedding. And as a common disclaimer, his very handsome friend Joey (on the left) is totally single. Snatch him up now, ladies.
Anyhoo, Ryan’s friend Brian (on the right) and his wife Jessi are due with their first baby boy (Everett) in December. To say we are excited for them would be the understatement of the century.
(Jessi and Brian with Ryan and I at the shower they generously threw us when Henry was only a little jelly in my belly.)
As soon as they found out it was a boy, Ryan and Brian started plotting their sons’ friendships. And I started giving Jessi unsolicited advice.ย I always said I wouldn’t do that (giving unsolicited advice). But, I can’t help myself. It’s just so hard to keep all my opinions to myself. And for God’s sake, I did all the research on a stroller so I may as well pass on the info, right? ๐ Hopefully she doesn’t hate it too much.
Another (less obnoxious) thing I wanted to give her was a quilt. When she started planning Everett’s room, she picked the fabrics and made bedding and window coverings with her mom. I offered to make the quilt to coordinate.
When I asked what type of quilt she preferred, she chose one of my favorite types – a simple strip quilt in varying widths. I love that you can use tons of different fabrics. I love that you can use solids. I love that you can use straight quilting.
I’ve made a few other strip quilts over the years – the Mickey Mouse quilt, and two blue and brown boys quilts (here and here). Like the others, this one came together fairly easily and quickly. (This makes a great beginner quilt, by the way.)
It was great that it was fairly quick, because as usual, I didn’t start early. And I was totally hand binding it the evening before the shower so I could squeeze in time to wash and dry it. And snap a few pictures.
In addition to using their nursery fabrics, I added some solids and an “E” for baby Everett.
I love how the binding turned out on this one. Usually, I use a solid or a simple dot. But, I used the most bold of the patterns and I really think it gives the quilt a special pizazz.
In retrospect, I wish I had thought through the “E” placement. It blends with the blue of the pattern behind it. But, that’s okay. I still think the monogram turned out well.
And more important than what I think, Jessi seemed to really love it. She even said she was fighting back tears. That makes the late-night finishing totally worth it. I hope she and baby E gets lots of use out of this quilt – for naps, play and cuddling.

Another fantastic job, I love everything you make. Be aware that when Wee Wellington Two bursts into existence someday, he or she will require some of this business.
p.s. I’m sure you covered it in your nursh posts, but did you make crib sheets? I am in the market for some cute ones since we’re going to be going to a toddler bed and using the crib mattress.

That is beautiful!!! Jessi is so lucky to have a handmade custom quilt for the little guy. You’re amazing.

HAHAHAHA Seriously had to put that wonderful pic of me on the internet? All pics of me at weddings should be thrown away. I know you have some regular ones somewhere. But Pam will be please to know that I’m being pimp out as often as possible.
Hopefully Rett will be a little more normal than his father.
Guess the quilt is ok too. Good job Kim.

Love it! I’m sure Everett will love it too! Isn’t it crazy how guys can be buddies for so long? And even after doing ridiculous things to one another (I’ll have to tell you that in private). I’m also amazed when they don’t see each other for a year or so they act like it’s only been a few days since they’ve seen one another.

It’s absolutely fabulous.
I think I might try that method when I make a quilt for my newly pregnant friend!
We’ve been friends for over 15 years through thick and thin….but you are right drama and life get in the way much easier with women. ๐

Oh and guys are the masters of long term friendships. I think it’s bc they’re so forgiving! They can go for months without talking and just pick up right where they left off. Us women are just too high maintenance for that.
Danielle says
I’m so jealous of your sewing skills! There’s so many cool things I want to make but every time I debate about buying a machine and learning how to sew I talk myself out of it. Still haven’t figured out how to make a quilt with those no-sew iron on strips. ๐
Cindy @The Flipping Couple says
Oh my goodness! It’s beautiful. I love all the fabrics together. You’re an impressive quilt-making machine, Kim!!

The quilt is fantastic…but even better the ‘life-long’ relationship already built in between the sons! My husband and his best friend from school…the sons have known each other since birth, and now they each have 3 kids of their own…so we are working on the third generation of an enduring friendship! good luck to you all!
