We went out with our friends on Saturday night (fun). And because they are expecting, talk turned to the nursery.
Ann and I got to chatting and I found out she was having a hard time narrowing down what she wanted. She and Jon are Mickey-lovers and Jon had suggested a Mickey nursery, but Ann didn’t like the theme-y, licensed bedding and sets.
I’m sorry. Gag. They are kinda yucky.
Well, all at once, two words hit me. Polka dots. We started talking about using red or black and white polka dots to subtly tie to Mickey, with a few more blatant Mickey pieces.
Could there anything more fun for a baby room than polka dots and Mickey?
So, Ann and I came home and started doing some searching on the Internet. (Isn’t that what you do on double dates?) The more we found, the cuter it got (in my opinion).
Here are a few cool nurseries with red and black from which we drew inspiration.
I like polka dots and the colors red and black because it doesn’t scream Mickey Mouse, and I think it’s really fun and can be appropriate for a girl or boy (they aren’t sure what they are having).
It sounds like Ann is going to try working with this theme, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the entire room when she left.
So, I thought you may like to see what we came up with as well. So, here’s Polyvore’s recreation of what I would do with the theme:
A chic Mickey Nursery by newlywoodwards on Polyvore.com
- Jon wants black furniture for the nursery, which would go great with the room. This simple IKEA Hemnes dresser has simple lines and could work for a changing table as a baby and a dresser as the child grows.
- On the wall, I’d put a red vinyl or painted stripe on the wall behind the crib like the Design Dazzle room above. Then, I would get a large Mickey head outline in black vinyl to center on the red stripe. If they turn out to have a girl, I’d add a red vinyl bow. If not, Mickey can stay as-is.
- I love the black and white polka dot panels.
- On the opposite wall, above the dresser, I’d put a Disney quote. Instead of placing it on the wall, I’d get a large barn board in the width of the dresser, paint it red and add the quote on top.
- I think it’d be neat to get 3-5 Mickey black and white line drawings framed for a little whimsical collection. I’d put these on the wall or along simple shelves with other photographs, prints and toys.
- I’d paint the walls a pale grey, something like the Valspar Gravity we used in our new bathroom.
- The tripod lamp with the black and white polka dot shade is a fun touch and wouldn’t take up precious dresser-top space. Although I really like this polka dot lamp from Pottery Barn Teen, too. (I’ve been told a lamp in the nursery is a must, for late-night feedings.)
- I love the black and white polka dot rug. (I’m also obsessed with this dottle rug at Pottery Barn Teen, too. It has larger dots. Too bad Polyvore wouldn’t let me clip it.)
- The bedding is a mix of black and white polka dots and stripes, for a fun mixture of patterns. I’d add a Mickey head to the quilt/blanket with either an applique or embroidery. I’d also see about adding it to the skirt and the bottom of the window panels. It sounds like Ann’s mom may make the bedding. If this is the case, I’d add red piping to the bumpers, skirt and window panels.
- A red chair or glider will add a pop of color, and I couldn’t help but add a black and white polka dot pillow.ย

You and I are on the same wavelength on the whole theme thing….it can be way overdone really fast. A Mickey theme could get there really fast but I.love.this. The dots and all your ideas are so fun but are not too Mickey. Wanna help with my nursery?
PS….I so need to learn to use Polyvore. Wanna give me lessons on that too:)?

I dig it! My favorite part is the rug!

That looks very cute, but if the room doesn’t have good light it could be a bit dark. The color and dot sceme will make it really easy for your quilt.

Decorating a nursery is 1 of 2 things on my “pro” list for having kids (the other being dressing them in cute clothes)…probably a good thing we’re holding off on the baby thing…
I like this because it doesn’t scream Mickey…just a whispher…

Now that is a Mickey Mouse theme that I could actually wrap my mind around! I love the idea of black and white Mickey sketches…subtle but cute.
When I was pregnant people kept asking me if I was going to have a Winnie the Pooh themed room (not sure why; I am not a Pooh person). No offense to anyone who does like licensed bedding, but it is definitely not my thing. Somehow I still got some Pooh sheets!

I love your design board! It still says “Mickey/Minnie” without SCREAMING it. Great work!! It will be a fabulous baby hang-out. ๐

super cute. I like how it is gender neutral but not yellow and green. ๐ Love the idea of the barn board Disney quote. So many of those ideas could be DIYed too!
