In a handful of months (fingers crossed), we’ll be getting the house ready to sell. That also means packing. Duh-duh-duh… the dread has already begun in this process. Because as much as I’d like to say we live simply, we have a lot.of.stuff. A LOT!
In preparation of the move, I’m beginning to work on purging the house of things we don’t need or use. It’s going to be a process, but I was thrilled when Jenny at Words on Wendhurst told me about her “111 things in 1/11” project.
Essentially, the project encourages us to get rid of at least 111 things in the first month of the year. That’s only about 28 things a week.
Did you hear that? It’s my husband, jumping and singing for joy at the prospect of getting rid of so many things. He’s in his height of glory right now. He would live in a 10 by 10 hut with nothing but one change of clothes and a Brita pitcher if I would let him.
I won’t.
Anyhoo… now that the house is clean and rid of all traces of Christmas, it’s a perfect time.
I’m planning to work my way through the house this month. I’m beginning with the Christmas decorations.
Then, I’ll move on to the office (a’la junk pit), the closets and the kitchen. If I have time, I’ll work on the basement, too.
I’m going to ask myself these questions:
- Have I used it in the past 6 months?
- Do I even like it?
- Is there room to store it?
Will you join me? Let’s declutter to start the new year.

Christmas decorations will be some of the victims in my house too. 🙂 Do you hear the evil laugh? Looking forward to hearing about your progress tomorrow!

Awesome! I’m participating as well and I’m so excited to get rid of stuff . . . looking forward to talking about it in tomorrow’s post!

I am so down. I’m planning a giant (not really) yard sale for May, so although I’m de-cluttering, it’s all going to go down my basement…in an organized fashion of course. But after the yard sale, that crap is outta here!

I have so much junk in my house, I think that I’m going to have to jump on board with this… that, or I’ll do the 40 trash bags in 40 days for Lent. But it. has. to. happen. Also… I am continually astounded and impressed by your house progress. Keep up the good work!

Yay for decluttering. If you need to borrow a few things to get rid of I have a dumpster full in my driveway right now. 😉

I think that this is a great idea! 111 items sound like a lot, but it can be done! Good luck!

Wow, 28 things a week- that is a big task. Do pairs of items (like socks) count as two? I sure hope so. Be sure to share you list of 111.

Oh goodness, that’s definitely something I SHOULD do – can I be a tentative “yes”? 🙂 My husband would be right alongside yours, jumping for joy.

Kim — I’m with ya!!! 111 in 1/11. I can do that!!!

I was going to do this while I was off these past 2 weeks, but didn’t get to it. I need to get rid of stuff because we are in the process of selling our house and I don’t want to move some of this stuff.
My goals is to go through one room each weekend.

I challenged myself to get rid of 100 things in November, just before my parents came for a visit. It was surprisingly easy – and I don’t consider myself to actually have a lot of stuff!
I’m ready for another challenge – I have way more Christmas stuff than I actually need.

I laughed out loud picturing your husband in a hut with a Brita pitcher!!! 😉
Smart questions to ask…I’ve been doing that too with old clothes and some of the girls’ toys. It helps. 🙂

I wish I could get rid of things. Alas, I am borderline hoarder and hate to part with things. GAH!
