I’ve been redeemed…by The Pioneer Woman.
You may remember my kitchen disaster, starring The Pioneer Woman’s cookbook. (If you don’t, read it. I won’t be upset if you laugh at my expense.) I haven’t made anything else from her book since. We were taking a break, so to speak.
But, last weekend, I remembered a post from Laurel at Ducks in a Row (who is better than Martha in my humble opinion). It was about the fact that she often uses the dough function on her bread maker to make dough for pizza bread, rolls, etc. Ryan’s grandmother had given us her bread machine, and I haven’t used it all that much. But, I found the book and figured out how to use the dough function. It’s so nice, because it avoids the mess and time of making homemade pizza crust.
I used The Pioneer Woman’s pizza crust recipe, but I subbed half the flour for whole wheat. (I just put it all in the bread machine instead of following the instructions.) It was super yummy and ridiculously simple and fool-proof. Ryan and I have decided that we must stick with homemade pizza crust going forward.
Take that, Pioneer Woman. Homemade crusts for eternity. Mwahaha…
Do you make homemade breads or crusts?
(Sorry for the pic-less post. No excuses… I just didn’t take any photos.)

Define homemade…..does warming up a Boboli pizza/flatbread crust count? I slice my own tomatoes & shred my own cheese even.
I’m an epic domestic failure. =(

John uses Alton Brown’s recipe- it is good but takes forever and John isn’t a neat-clean-as-I-go type cook. In a pinch I use trader joes.

my mom used to make all kinds of breads and doughs from scratch, but I haven’t quite jumped in yet (unless you count pumpkin and other such flavored “bread”). I usually buy pizza dough from the deli section in Publix – esp if it’s on sale!

Homemade crust rules!! I have a standard dough recipe that I use for lots of my baking. Once you find one you love it is easy.

Very nice! That’s a ton of work, you must be so glad it’s done.
And I love the garden right next to the deck, what a great space for it.

Yes, we only make our own pizza crust. Our favorite is by Tyler Florence. No more frozen pizzas in this house.

i haven’t gotten to other breads yet, but i really like making homemade pizza crust and soft pretzels. i started off doing them with the dough hook on the kitchenaid, (and still do, sometimes, when i’m lazy or have too many other things going on), but frequently i use the method recommended by deb from smitten kitchen at the end of her pretzel page (http://smittenkitchen.com/2007/02/knotted-and-stacked-disappearing-acts/). very easy and very delicious!

I make pizza dough in my KicthenAid mixer and love it, but I”m glad to know there’s another way! Also, Pioneer Woman’s pie crust is goooooood.

I use my bread machine 2-3 times a week to make our sandwich bread. I tried with whole wheat once (which I much prefer!), and it turned out rock hard. I think I just need to find a better recipe. Love my bread machine!

I made pizza crust once and it was terrible. I used my bread machine like 10 times before giving up on the contraption. And then I concluded that bread products should be made outside the FiveCamels household. 😉

I’ve never made pizza crust in my life and now feel like epic failure as wife and general human. But at 9:10 am, I could kinda go for pizza. Thanks Kim.

I’ve been using the pioneer woman’s crust recipe lately… it’s pretty delish, but I’ve been looking for a whole wheat recipe. I might just steal your idea and substitute it for the flour in PWs recipe. We’ve been grilling our pizzas lately and they are AMAZING. The crust gets so crispy… yum!

Kim — I’ll have to give you my pizza sauce recipe now that you have taken canning classes. Its a great recipe and super easy to do.
We haven’t bought a pizza in 3 years .. since I learned how to make cheese. So homemade crust, sauce and cheese …. and it is pure heaven.

I cheat a little. I buy Trader Joe’s pizza dough and use that. It’s only a buck and tastes way better than ordering one!
