My ideas are bigger than my follow-through

September 3, 2015 by Kim Woodward

I’m a big dreamer.

I love the IDEA of so many things. But once the idea has played out in my head, I’m on to new BIG AND FUN things.

My husband would tell you that I’m not so great at follow-through.

Case in point: Compost bins.
Last time you saw these, they were so pretty and nice and well-groomed.

Now, they are growing trees inside of them. You think I’m kidding but I’m not. There are TREES growing INSIDE the compost bins. It only took three months. Who knew?

I haven’t put anything in them in over a month. And my husband can do nothing but roll his eyes because I insisted I have these because of all the composting I would do.

I would be so green you’d call me Kermit.

This didn’t happen. But I would argue that the soil must be REALLY fertile and working well composting in there if TREES are growing. Am I right?

And then I realized that there is also a pretty healthy tomato plant. Winning. I’m gardening without even knowing it.

Another case in point: The garden.
Speaking of the garden … I just knew this year’s garden would be better than the last. Because we’re living here so what better things do I have to do than tend and weed and enjoy the garden. Because, duh.

Today it’s known as “It’s a Jungle Out There.” Henry won’t even get near it because he gets lost and we may never find him again.

I know you probably think this means we’ve gotten no great results, but you’d be wrong. We cannot stop getting stuff. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, dill, cilantro … And the PUMPKINS. So I’m not too worried. I’m eating my weight in tomatoes.

Except seriously, no magazine spotlights on the garden yet.Overgrown garden pictures6

Maybe next year?

Lest you think it’s just outdoor-related, I’ll set you straight.
– My car is embarrassingly disgusting and full-to-the-brim at any given moment.
– The drawers with clothes I spent days organizing and folding to look perfect are stuffed full and barely close.

So, this post is really just to set you straight. I’m pretty good at coming up with wonderful ideas. But the follow-through, not so much.

Do you still love me?

Thanks for sharing this. I agree, your ideas are really big that is why I enjoy reading your posts. Taking care of your home and transforming it to become really beautiful involve hard work. Your garden looks promising, I would love to see how you will be able to make it more beautiful.

Try “lasagna gardening.” Minimal weeding….it saved our lives last year! Did it again this year. Weeding is no longer an option for me.

Personally, I love you all the more, except I do have to say #thingsthatwouldneverhappeninphoenix. Seriously, the only thing you can grow accidentally here is weeds. Lots of weeds.

My garden looks exactly the same. We seriously cannot stop getting things from it though. I have a 4′ basil plant, 2 romas that WON’T STOP and a zucchini plant that actually died mid-summer and has come back to life!! Don’t get me started on the peppers either…HA! My husband said he is counting down the days until he just mows it over. I am letting it go as long as possible though, because I find it hilarious.

That’s a riot! I haven’t been in the garden for almost a week because of the heat so I’m anxious to get out there and get more TOMATOES. They never end. I just barely got all of the last tomatoes frozen and sauced 😉

Yeah, one time I told Shaun I wanted all the dress shirts he needed ironed to be on one side of the closet and the ‘good to go’ ones to be on the other side. He said ‘Ok, then all my shirts will be on the ‘need ironing’ side. Yeah, my ideas are sometimes not fully thought out! But yours were all reasonable, you just need more hours in the day!

Without a doubt, girl. Good to know you’re human, like the rest of us.
I was thinking the same thing as I was reading about the compost bins, that if you have crops growing in there, it must be potent stuff! You’re on the right track.

Hey, life happens. It’s not a contest. You’re enjoying your time and that’s all that really matters.
    Have a great weekend!

Love this post!! My garden looks like that too! But aren’t you afraid of coming across a snake amongst all the weeds?

Hmmmm…. I’m a little worried about it now. 😉 I haven’t come across one, so I’m pretty confident.

i’m with you, follow through is hard and rarely accomplished in our house. i blame the toddler… though if i’m being honest i stunk at follow through pre-toddler too!

As someone else said, love you and your blog even more. I’ve stopped reading “only perfection” blogs but still love to follow along your house building adventure. Your natural garden and the fact that you are still getting tons of veggies is great. That’s all that matters! And I bet with all those plants the soil will be better next year. I still have pumpkin seeds in a package and only weeds in my yard, so you are miles ahead of me 🙂

Yes I still love you!!! Actually this post makes me love you more. I like when people are real. Ps i left for Florida and when I got back my pumpkin patch was dead:( I guess I’m going to have to visit the Newlywoodward Pumpkin Patch of Fun. That’s a thing right?

ha! you’ll notice I haven’t posted any garden updates since back in the spring when it was all new and pristine. I’m impressed that you’re at least getting stuff from yours. Our summer was so hot and dry that everything died….it’s like the garden needed me to WATER it or something ;).

You’re adorable Kim! I love this post! Your veggie plants seem to be loving the garden this year, so that’s what’s important, right? 🙂

So glad that someone else has a garden that could be a twin to mine! Love it, reminds me so much of me!

This is exactly why your blog is quickly becoming one of my favorites to follow. We obviously read blogs for inspiration and to see cool projects (like building an entire house from scratch!), but too much perfection gets to be intimidating. Thanks for keeping it real!

Also, I kind of like the “natural” garden look. We have a ridiculous amount of lawn to mow and I’ve been trying to convince my husband to just let it grow and see what happens. 🙂

oh i so relate to this…. i end up with projects in half done states, or things i think will be amazing for organization, and then i make a mess. i should show you my “office” right now.

Yes, you are still loved ! Looks to me like a normal life. I have big dreams in my head too but after work, daughter and husband( no particular order). I just need (want) to sit in a stupor on the couch… Read about your adventures, “pin” all my big plans and aspirations and laugh at all the “perfect, glorious, beautiful people” on FB. Luckily I know the thing that really matters is time spent with my husband and daughter. They don’t care one bit that I never complete that “perfect project”. As long as you are tending to YOU, Henry and your husband you are doing it all right!

I had to laugh to myself reading your post this morning! It sounded a lot like me…..love your honesty!
