Whoooooooooo-eeeeeeeeeeeee …
This post has been a long time coming. From planning, planning and more planning, to building, painting, and installing countertops and drawers and shelves and a vent hood … I have talked a lot about the kitchen.
But we all know that kitchen is so important in any family’s home. The heart of the home. And now our kitchen has a heart beat, and it’s a GOOD HEALTHY HEART BEAT.
There are still some things to get done. Like toe kicks and backsplash and a lot of touch-up paint … (check out the update to skip ahead a bit.)
But let’s just revel in the beauty that is this kitchen as it is. I could gush and gush and gush some more. But I won’t. Or maybe just a little.
The cabinets
These cabinets were a true labor of love. Our friend Dave really outdid himself – he built all these cabinets and perfected every detail. From the dove-tail drawers to inset doors to details like a pull-out dog gate and a custom island, we are so thankful that he gave so much time, skill and knowledge to our kitchen.
Painting was a legit process – we painted all the cabinets in place (before doors and drawers). And then we sprayed all the doors outside.
It took a coat of primer and 2-3 thin coats of paint to get the finish we desired. (Behr provided paint for this project and we chose to use Behr Alkyd semi-gloss paint in white. It’s the same paint we used on doors and trim, and it gets a nice durable finish with self-leveling.)
All of the interior shelves and drawers also got two coats of poly finish on all sides for durability.
The cabinet hardware
One of the wonderful parts of inset cabinet doors is the ability to choose latch hardware. I fell in love with this look and think it’s such a timeless style.
We went with satin nickel hardware – which is about as close of a match as you’ll get to stainless steel appliances. It feels classic and also a bit modern. And the hardware pops nicely against the white cabinetry.
All hardware was provided by D. Lawless Hardware – Liberty matchbox catches and Liberty cup pulls.
The cooking area
The stove and hood are such a lovely focal point in the kitchen. I think the hood is one of my favorite parts of the entire kitchen design. With the addition of the cup rack beside the stove and the pew rack right about the stove, it looks a little quirky and a lot functional.
The two pull-out drawers around the stove were a worthwhile splurge. One holds my cookie sheets and cutting boards while the other stores away my cooking utensils.
The Island
From this point forward, The Island will be capitalized. It’s a new style rule on the blog. Because The Island needs respect and special treatment.
It also needs lots of love and words of encouragement. Just like me.
As a reminder, it is topped with a walnut butcher block top from Lumber Liquidators and three of the four sides are finished with antique car siding. The deep drawers are a dream and the pull-out garbage makes me feel like the Queen of England.
The wall-o-shelves
This kitchen isn’t really gigantic by today’s standards. But with the addition of a full 10-foot wall of cabinetry, we have more storage than we know what to do with.
We decided to skip the glass doors and keep the middle cabinets open for a pseudo-china-hutch. I’m thinking those cabinets will get a paint treatment at some point. They are a great spot to rotate my favorite things and seasonal decor.
The floor to ceiling cabinets on each end hold a lot of food, small appliances and baking supplies. The middle cabinets are very nearly empty still. It’s crazy to have so much space after 18 months of tiny living.
(I painted these cabinets for some contrast – check out the update here.)
The sink
From the mudroom, the first thing you spot is the sink and large windows. The deep stainless sink turned out to be a great addition to the whole space. I think it’s a nice look with the stainless appliances.
The fridge
Having a surround around the fridge feels like such an upgrade. Dave finished the ends of the cabinet to tie into the Shaker cabinet doors. It’s a nice look and flows beautifully into the dining nook and living room.
Other details
So, will there be more projects on the horizon in the kitchen? Sure. But we sure are enjoying such a beautiful space.
It actually still feels a little unreal that this kitchen belongs to us.
What do you think? Do you have a favorite part?

Kim,
Really love how your kitchen turned out. The only thing I would do differently is a counter wide refrigerator, but love how this refrigerator has the cabinet around it. Always love reading your blog although I did not automatically get it for about a year and now it has started coming again.

Looks beautiful my dear! I love all of the accents and decor that you’ve used throughout. I absolutely agree that housing the fridge in cabinetry makes it a high end finish. Well done, and I can’t wait to see it in person!

The word that comes to mind is crisp. So clean and crisp. Love it all, but mostly the old-fashioned icebox door pulls. So retro and yet funky enough to be modern.
Y’all sure know how to put a house together. Enjoy the space!

My favorite part is that there’s more storage than you know what to do with! I can’t even imagine; it sounds like something made up….like being totally caught up on laundry ;). I’m going to keep that paint in mind when we get our shelving finished for our den–sounds like just what I need!

Love your kitchen. It is truly a farmhouse kitchen the way I imagine one. You really thought of everything. If I ever get a chance to design a kitchen (unlikely), I will be using yours as inspiration.
