This is a view that makes a girl smile. This is our DIY Barnwood Vent Hood.
Oh, Mama Mia … the wood on this hood makes me giddy.
It was a natural place to add a more natural tones into a white kitchen – and Ryan and I were excited about using more of our barn wood for this project.
If you recall, the barn wood was from the barn Ryan tore down and reassembled on our property. Because it was a corn crib, there were a lot of beautiful interior wood walls. We still have lots of barn wood leftover for future projects like this.
We have been saving this specific board for a project in the home – it has notes from 1949 and 1939 when the farmer scratched out crops and fields. It’s just too cool and the kitchen is a perfect place to include it. You’d only know it was there if someone told you.
DIY BARNWOOD VENT HOOD
To create a custom range hood, Ryan started by drawing the basic shape of the prospective hood on the wall. This gave us a chance to see the scale and height. (We drew it in pencil.)
Then, he created a frame for the hood with 2x4s and plywood. First he attached plywood sides in the shape we agreed upon. I wasn’t here for that process, but you can see the frame inside – it’s mounted very securely to the wall.
Before finishing the outside of the frame, we needed to install and hook up the vent fan and vent it out the back wall (we purchased a Broan Power Pack and Liner from Amazon – they will be completely hidden so I just wanted something simple that would do the job). Our friend vented this out through the wall with ductwork.
Here’s how the vent looks from the bottom – still covered in construction dust, but you’ll forgive me, right?
Finally, Ryan cut and assembled the barn wood exterior – this is what you actually see from the kitchen and what matters the most for aesthetics. The barn wood was tongue and groove, which meant that the boards fit together perfectly.
And after all this beautiful work, Ryan earned bonus points by installing my cup rack next to the range.
It’s the perfect place to display some of my favorite things. And it’s officially the first piece of decor to hang on our wall. I love a man who can hang a cup rack. Or at least, I love this man who can hang a cup rack.
By the way, we still have no closet rods. But I have a cup rack and pennants. Priorities.
What’s your dream project?

Jennifer Heath says
I have a multitude of things that need to be done around the house. My house is an OTR truck driver and gone a lot. I know how to use many of his tools but he takes most of the portable ones, including his drill, on the road with him, leaving me stuck and unable to complete my many diy projects. I would love to have a drill of my own, especially one that is lightweight and easier for me to use as I have psoriatic arthritis which is affecting the joints in my hands. Thank you for the chance to win.
Beth Rees says
I guess the answer would be everything. I need to make some new pallet signs, build a pantry in the kitchen, and finish a swing in my backyard. Always to many projects.

I am in the process of buying a home for the first time (on my own!). The house was built in 1880, but has been remodeled on the inside. The outside is a different story, though, and as my first project I would love to build a simple patio deck for watching the sun set.
Stephanie says
We don’t have any major projects in the works, but we do have a pile of barn wood in our back yard that needs to be turned into SOMETHING, and our current circular saw is very old and doesn’t cut in a straight line. =P So a new one would just be helpful to have.
Christine A says
My husband and I are buying our first house, set to close at the end of June! One of the first projects we will tackle is strengthening up the wobbly deck banister. That is definitely a project that a new drill would help us out on. Great giveaway!

First, I love this!!! What a beautiful project! I would love to make a picnic table with an ice bucket built in to the middle.
Colleen Bennett says
First let me start off by saying I’ve never commented on your blog before but I ready it religiously!
I think the first project we (i.e. my handyman husband) would tackle would be some awesome open shelving for in our open dining room space, like these:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/93801604716997056/
I’ve been wanting them for quite some time now, but we don’t have the proper tools. Winning these tools would make it possible for us to do this project!
Lisa says
I would love to try this drill! We have a cordless drill now, but I keep using the old corded one because the former is too heavy for me to use for any length of time! If I won the drill, I would probably finish organizing my laundry room by hanging some shelves and adding some storage containers for nuts and bolts and whatnot. LOVE the hood vent!
Kathy says
This has been on my “wants” list for a while!! With three kids and a farm, the time involved pulling out tools and extension cords ends up keeping me from my to-do list. Anytime I borrow my cousin’s cordless, I get so much done in one day!
deanna says
I love reading your posts about building your home. You two are so ambitious! Great job!

Haley says
I would love to build a toddler bed for my little one!

Megan says
Your house is so lovely! I have been following along getting many ideas from you. We are going to start construction of our new home in the next couple of weeks and I am sure we could put the drill and saw to good use. Thanks for all of the inspiration and the chance to win some tools.

We have lots of projects to do around our place — build and install a half wall outside to hide our garbage cans, install some new shelves and ORGANIZE our garage, put up new blinds/curtains/something in our living room, hang stuff, fix stuff, projects, projects. A new drill would be fun. 🙂 Looking forward to more pictures of your NEW HOME!!!

Tara says
I would build a Classic Post + Board Fence to provide a visual barrier between my hvac system and the view from the street.
Mandy Ford says
Ahh it is looking SO good Kim!! Your hubby is a rock star! 🙂 I don’t know if I would want Dan to use that circular saw, but I’m sure he could come up with a fun project for it.
Heather says
I love how your vent hood turned out! Everything in your home is beautiful. I have really enjoyed reading along on your house building journey. I would love to make a vent hood similar to yours?
Elizabeth says
I have a million projects that I want to do but I am not “allowed” to touch the tools. HAHA! I am a bit of a klutz but I could use my own tools and build my own barn wood console table that I want on my porch that I have been begging the hubster to make. We live in the hubster’s grandparents old farmhouse and the barn wood is actually from the old barn when it was a working farm. You think that he would jump right on it but he kindly tells me that every time I go on a “Craigslist mission”, I add hours of work to his already too busy schedule so the barn wood table has to wait until he finishes the other 2,459 projects I have on my honey-do list!!
Lindsey says
I have my eyes on a project for my classroom that I simply don’t have the equipment for. Winning a drill and circular saw would make my sensory table dreams come true!
Jessica Willman says
My husband and I are getting a room ready for foster care. Would use the drill to put up some words of encouragement for the sweet ones that would pass through our home.
Adrienne B says
Well, we have two drills. One is big and heavy, the other is basically a powered screw driver (not much torque). So this would probably fit well in my lady hands and help me finally organize the basement disaster/coweb zone.
Lindsey Litton says
Looks great! I’d like to add some built-ins to our master bedroom closet. Thanks for the fun giveaway!
Kelly @ North Country Nest says
That hood is gorgeous and I absolutely love that you incorporated the the piece with the farmer’s notes. How cool is it to have a piece of history in your new home?
All my best,
Kelly
Maria says

Laura F. says
I would use that to build a window seat for my daughter’s room!
Dusty says
We are currently buying 10 acres of land and will be building a new home. While we will be using a builder there are many many projects we plan on doing ourselves. My heart wants my first real project to be a farmhouse table and bench. So needless to say, this drill would get so much use over the years! Thank you for writing this blog. I get giddy every time there’s a new post. I gain so much information and have learned so much from you.
Sarah says

We are purchasing a new home, so there will be lots of new home improvement projects happening. So I am sure I could find something to work on with a new drill! Thanks for the give-a-way!

Ben was just saying he could use a new drill! We have seven billion things we need to hang around the house still. You’ve also given us the build your own house bug, so that’s on our future radar as well, and these would come in super handy for that!
Hannah says
I’m in need of a beautiful and simple mantle made of reclaimed wood.
