We’ve been living in a 320-square-foot space for almost 9 months, and we haven’t killed anyone.
I think that’s worth celebrating! Who’s bringing cake?
But really, there have been some major adjustments we’ve had to make to our living arrangements because of the smaller space. And the biggest changes have been in our sleeping arrangements.
In our new house, our (modest by modern standards) master bedroom is almost 3/4 the size of our entire apartment! So that’s going to feel like a castle. I will probably just spend my days lounging in the room.
Kidding. Not kidding.
But we have made this tiny space work for us. Here are a few of the biggest adjustments we’ve had.
Our bed is also a couch.
Ryan and I sleep on a pull-out daybed. At night, it has two twin size mattresses (which nearly makes it the equivalent of a king size bed). And first thing in the morning, I push in the bed and store the second mattress behind the daybed.
It’s like a transformer. Only cooler.
The sofa gives us plenty of room to play/lounge/watch television/wrestle. You know, all the things that are mandatory in a home.
It’s not difficult to do this – it takes less than 2 minutes. And it makes the entire apartment look neater and more spacious. But it’s sort of a pain. It’s definitely gotten old and I won’t miss just jumping into bed at night.
Our bed is about 6 steps from Henry’s bed.
You can see that our bed is only separated from Henry’s bedroom by a few steps and a couple of pieces of furniture.
That means that when he does go to bed, Ryan and I go into lock-down mode. Henry doesn’t like the door shut and it’s just not a battle I’m willing to wage. So we just hold out – in the dark – until he passes out.
I’d like to say that once he goes to sleep, we are really productive. But that doesn’t happen. Most days, Ryan falls asleep before Henry does.
Noise and lights are more disruptive.
Ryan is probably one of the heaviest sleepers you’ll meet. But even he admits that there are some serious distractions in the small space.
- Like the oven light which is like a BEACON OF LIGHT in the dark. We have to cover it with an oven mitt every night.’
- Or the ticking clock in the kitchen. We use a sound machine for the sanity of all of us.
And on my end, Ryan’s nasal congestion could truly keep me up for hours. And the smaller space seems to make this even more noticeable.
Thankfully, Ryan’s been using Breathe Right® nasal strips for years. It’s really a gift to me that he wears them every night – especially in our smaller quarters. He and I both sleep better because Breathe Right® nasal strips help him breathe better.
These are drug-free and clinically proven to lift the nasal passage and open up the nose to breathe and sleep better.
To use them:
- Clean your face.
- Position the strip.
- Apply to nose.
- Zzzzzzzzz ….

Kurt and I sleep in separate bedrooms. It’s not just the snoring, he’s a restless sleeper ( yells and thrashes) once he finally falls asleep… And he has insomnia. I need my sleep. Plus, Gidget sleeps with me in my bed. She’s not allowed in his bed. 😉

Haha priorities.

I have seriously considered sleeping in another room because of Justin’s snoring problem. It’s NOT GOOD. I’m definitely trying these bad boys.
Also, what are your plans for the barn when you move into your house? I’m sure I missed that somewhere, or have a bad memory.

It will be a guest space (come visit?). And probably my craft space. And I have been recently thinking about putting it on airbnb.

We all know that nothing is cooler than a transformer, Kim ;). Or so I’ve been told by my husband.
Kim says
I agree. Nothing is cooler.

Breathe Right strips have totally saved our marriage. Or at least us sleeping in the same bed. Now if they only made them for dogs. 😛

I’m serious when I say they are key to my sleep. Glad we aren’t alone.
