I love planting lots of flowers in the spring – it adds a much-needed pop of color to the yard, before many of our perennials come up. It’s the ultimate way to add curb appeal.
This year, we needed this more than ever because our barn has little to no landscaping. To help, I asked Ryan to build me a few simple window boxes and I set out to fill them with color. Once Ryan built these little beauties and I painted them, it was time to plant.
And I love how these little boxes look already.
I ended up picking four plants for each window box at my local garden center – careful to choose something thrills (spikes for a little punch), spills (over the edge) and fills (spreads through the box). I think doing this gives it a lot of great visual interest.
I think the corkscrew rush is my favorite.
I love container gardening because it’s quick and easy. Here’s a peek at how it looks now – and I can’t wait to see how it grows and spills over throughout the summer.
I added moisture control potting soil, because I’ve found that container gardens and window boxes get dry quickly when they are in full sun.
Don’t you love the boxes? Ryan built them out of cedar and added scraps from a fence project on the ends. Love that little fence ear detail.
If you are working on a container garden (or any curb appeal project), now’s the time.
What do you think of our little window box project?

Kim, wow this looks so nice, I too love the cork screw, I think because it makes me think of wine:) I can’t wait to see how they fill in. Nice work friend. You can come do all of my pots now since you did such a lovely job.

Those are adorable! I always use up all my gardening energy on vegetable gardening; I should save some for flowers sometime…..

I totally understand – the “main” garden is a huge undertaking. But flowers are so easy peasy.
