Well, it was time for an update on our basement – in short, it’s looking great and coming right along since the last update.
Look, ma! Walls!
Shortly after the last post, our contractors came out and started setting the walls. It’s been pretty fun to watch the crews and see the process. It’s a well-oiled machine.
It took about a day to get the walls set and then they started pouring the next day.
After pouring, another crew came out the following day to remove the forms. And then it was about 6 days later that another crew came out to backfill around the foundation. This guy was awesome – he made the dirt go really far and it’s looking a lot like a yard now. They also loaded in an insane amount of rock for the floors – we lost count at a dozen truckloads.
But that rock really make it look like a true basement.
We chose to go with 9 foot walls in the basement, which should make it feel a little less dungeon-like. We have to stick pretty close to Henry because he desperately loves the basement. And he keeps trying to make a break for it and gives me a heart attack. Do you see the height difference from the garage to the basement?
Next up:
- Running the plumbing in the basement.
- Final grade for the basement.
- Geothermal tubes and insulation run into the basement.
- Pour floors in basement and garage.
- WALLS! (Did you hear the angels singing?)
Our trusses should be in by June 1, and our windows will be in around June 18. We won’t be ready for them exactly at that time, but it means that things are really moving along.
We’re gaining a little momentum, but it’s been slower than I’d wish. We really need to be thinking (at least) a few steps ahead, and I don’t feel like we’ve found our stride yet.
Still new at this whole house-building thing.

You have a basement! yay! 9 foot walls are totally the way to go….I get claustrophobic in basements with low ceilings. It’s good to know I can visit you and hang out in your basement without fear now 😉

I remember this stage so well! Who knew rocks could be so exciting – and that it takes so many of them to fill a foundation.
PS – Your property is gorgeous!

SO EXCITING!!!! I love that you went with taller walls in the basement. You guys are doing such a great job thinking through things. It was also nice of you to arrange for such fantastic entertainment for Henry all summer. : )
