You guys.
It’s getting real over here.
Like, we are going to be living in a BARN. SOON.
When someone asks my kid if he was raised in a barn, he can say, “Yeah.” (He pretty much answers yeah to everything anyhow.)
The next big step …a toilet. We have a toilet. That works.
This is sort of a big deal because it was a huge process to get the septic tank installed. But, the septic tank is in and everything’s been run into the barn. And now I don’t have to drive 15 minutes to my mom’s house to go to the bathroom.
It’s the little things.
(And no. I don’t ever go to the bathroom in nature. Ryan on the other hand …)
Moving on to other bathroom progress. A faucet! A pretty little number, no? (It’s the stainless Dawson model by Delta, and we bought ours at Menards.)
And the coolest part of all?
OUR SINK HAS HOT WATER. WE CAN WASH OUR HANDS WITH HOT WATER.
Because Ryan installed a hot water heater. This is our GINORMOUS hot water heater, in a tiny little utility room. It’s darn near impossible to take a good photograph of this room. And the water heater is bigger than we planned (but it still fits – woot!).
When shopping for a hot water heater (which is by far the least sexy thing to shop for), we learned that our power company has a 100 percent rebate on this super efficient electric water heater. (The rebate is for those of us who don’t have gas service from the power company.) It’s very large, but also very efficient.
And free.
So we obviously went for it.
This water heater also pulls heat out of the air, which means this room is as cool as a cucumber now. It’s pretty rad. I just wish it could cool our entire apartment. (Dream big, Kim.)
Okay, now it’s time to transition back to the bathroom. Because what more is there to say about a hot water heater?
So … I love this vanity so much in our little bathroom. We also picked up a mirrored medicine cabinet for above the faucet that should be installed shortly.
Here’s another view of the bathroom so far. Looking good, no? It’s downright spacious. (And it definitely feels bigger than our current bathroom.)
You can spot the white PVC plumbing in the picture above, which I thought would bother me more than it does. It’s really only visible from the tub. I may spray paint that. Or I may not.
Let’s just look at another view. Pretty.
Really all that’s left in the barn bathroom is the mirror, light, tub surround, and accessories (like toilet paper holders, towel racks, and the like).
What do you think?

What kind of flooring is that? It is beautiful! Is it durable? Thank you!

It’s sheet vinyl and we love it – planning to use it in our new build. More about the tile and a link to it is in this post – https://newlywoodwards.com/2014/07/love-sheet-vinyl-barn-apartment-updates.html

That’s a really great vanity. I love how it can read a bunch of different ways – rustic, modern, beachy – depending on the owner’s desire.
And those tiles? I’m intrigued about how they’re different size and laid at various directions.
Kim Woodward says
You are so right about the vanity – it feels rustic to me, but it could totally read differently.
The tile is a sheet of vinyl, of all things. It’s awesome! (AND SO SO SO CHEAP.)

Jenn @ HomeStyleReport says
You deserve a free water heater after having to hold it for 15 minutes to get to a bathroom…my gosh…just thinking about having to do that makes me squirm. Enough potty talk.
michelle@decorandthedog says
I was going to leave some inappropriate toilet comment. But your Mom reads this.
Wait, your Mom would probably love that! 🙂
Anyways, nice toilet.

Faboo! I have been known to heed the call of nature outdoors, but indoor plumbing is a plus! It looks very high-end! Enjoy!

I love that vanity, Kim – and that faucet is awesome. And woohoo for toilets, obviously, I just got distracted by the faucet. Coming along, cannot wait to see how everything comes together when your stuff is in it!

All those little steps just to get a working toilet and hot water! Now I remember how exhausting building is! 😉 Seriously though y’all are so incredible about finding things like a rebate for a FREE water heater!! Bravo!
Kim Woodward says
It really is crazy what it takes to get water and a toilet. And all the money.
Ahhhhh…… the money.
