Oh, hey there. My name is Kim and I’m sharing DIY Christmas gifts in January.
SLACKER.
But seriously, I think this gift could be great for nearly any occasion and any time of the year. In fact, I think it would be perfect for Valentine’s Day with a romantic love note or photo.
Yeah. That’s it. I’m just so far ahead that I’m already sharing Valentine’s Day gifts.
WINNING. (Just ignore the pretty Christmas lights. Those … are … Valentine’s Day lights?)
I actually made two of these this Christmas and I love them so much that I want one for me. It all started when I saw two beaautiful Threshold paddle cutting boards at Target on clearance for $4. I scooped them both up thinking I could make something with them for Christmas.
I have seen many of those great tablet holders on blogs and Pinterest. (Check out this awesome tutorial over at my friend Jen’s.) I love them but I don’t have a tablet. And I was thinking that the cutting board would be a lovely way to display notes, photos or recipes in the kitchen.
This project was so ridiculously simple, it’s embarrassing. I cut the name and est. date on vinyl with my Silhouette. Then I added the silver clip (which I stole from the fridge) with hot glue.
I decided not to add a block of wood on the back to prop it up. Instead, I thought it could be used on a wall. But if you want it on the countertop, I added an inexpensive black iron holder from Hobby Lobby. It holds a cookbook perfectly.
Two in one? And I may or may not have used it for some holiday baking before sending it off to it’s final home. Pre-loved. ๐
I think this is a fun twist on the DIY tablet stand and would make a lovely decoration for the kitchen. I even have a plan to use these for an upcoming party. Eek. Excited.
What do you think of my simple little DIY Christmas Valentine’s Day Whenever-You-Want gift?

I bought a bunch of theses and can’t get vinyl to sick to them. How did you get it to stick?
Kim Woodward says
I just used transfer tape and stuck it on. What type of vinyl are you using? I use the Silhouette brand it it sticks like glue.
Brenda says
i bought some vinyl form Expression, I’ve tried indoor and out door and even got some from a sign shop and nothing worked, its like the boards have a coating of light oil on them.
Kim Woodward says
Very strange. If it were me, I’d try lightly sanding the coating, wiping them clean and trying again.
Brenda says
I’ll try that Thanks!

What a great idea! I have so many cutting boards (as you can imagine) that we have gone through due to woods being weak or imperfect. I can now repurpose it again to make a memo board. I love it!!! Will share again once I’ve completed one.

This is so cute! I think that you could maybe use it as an ipad stand too- with that plate stand attachment like you did for recipes. I am always using recipes off my ipad and would find this super handy!!
Kim Woodward says
Definitely! It was a bit too wide for my Nook when I tested it but I know that iPads are a bit wider. That makes it even more handy.
Erin @ Domestic Adventure says
I love this! Also, I might not get to sharing homemade Christmas gifts until February, so you’re all good! I’m so behind on blog commenting, but please accept some belated Christmas, anniversary and New Year greetings!! xoxo
Kim Woodward says
Thank you, friend! Same to you!
Kelly @ View Along the Way says
Those are brilliant. And super cute. And as someone who still has all her Christmas decorations up, I’d say it looks perfectly on time. ๐
Kelly @ Corner of Main says
Cute! I’m pretty excited; I just got a Silhouette so I can’t wait to make things like this =)
Trina @ Let's Just Build a House says
you are SO ahead of the game kim ๐
Very cute and easy project. I wish I would have seen some of these on clearance. I could use one!
Amanda says
I absolutely love this! Probably borrowing this idea for next Christmas!
daisy says
It works! I could see putting some chalkboard paint on it (not sure how) and using it as a weekly menu in the kitchen or message center.
Kim Woodward says
That’s a great idea! I”m always a fan of chalkboards in a kitchen!
LizzieBeth says
Um… wedding season will be upon us soon so this is not a Christmas gift— it’s a wedding shower gift!
(don’t worry girl, I got your back ๐
Love the idea. In fact totally stealing it for the wedding shower I have coming up.
Yes… I still have friends getting married. LawdJesus will it ever end?

This is such a great idea for a bridal shower. I’m actually planning to make a bunch as photo frames for a kitchen shower I’m hosting in May. (I Know they have them at IKEA for $3 or $4, too.)
Ashley@AttemptsAtDomestication says
Super cute! What a great idea!
Gretchen@BoxyColonial says
Valentine’s lights already–you are so on top of things! ;). I’m so slacker that I decided to not even do a post about the beer carrier we made since it would have been after Christmas…because it’s not like anyone ever gives presents or drinks beer any other time of year or anything….
Kim Woodward says
It’s not too late! That’s a great gift for any time.
Alli says
I love it!! I want one!
Amy says
Love it, Kim! I needed that “one last thing” to fill in my kitchen wall. I think this might be it!
Emily @ imperfect says
Super cute idea! I always have notecards of recipes getting all stained because I just leave them on the counter under an overflowing pecan pie…or something.
Amber @ Wills Casa says
I’m glad you shared! This makes a great hostess gift too, so it doesn’t just have to be a Christmas thing!
Kim Woodward says
Great idea. Assuming you are the type of fancy person who brings hostess gifts. ๐

Love it for whatever time of year. Now you will have everyone scoring stores for inexpensive cutting boards.
Kim Woodward says
Totally! I’ve spotted them at IKEA for less than $4.

I’ve been meaning to make the tablet version of this. Super cute! This post also reminds me to post about a handmade gift that I didn’t want to share before Christmas!
cassie says

Kim Woodward says
Definitely a great idea. But alas, no ipad at the Woodwards. Living in the 1800s practically.
