I have my mom to thank for finishing this quilt. She came over and cared for Henry so I could piece, quilt and bind this quilt before shipping it off to Minnesota.
It’s a gift for my high school friend who will have her own baby boy very soon. I had actually pulled out all the fabric before Henry was born, but then got distracted. Thank goodness for my mom or it would have never gotten finished.
I’ve been waiting for a chance to use these fabrics again. They are part of a jelly roll of Moda Pure fabrics. (I made a similar quilt for my friend Shelly’s little guy last year.) I also mixed in some brown a white solid strips.
Every time I post a strip quilt I get asked for the pattern. There is no pattern that I know of. Just sew the strips together. I also add a white strip along all four sides as a pseudo-border. Using a jelly roll makes this project super simple, because the strips are already cut. I’ve also made strip quilts with varying sized strips, which is fun, too (check out my Mickey quilt as an example).
This is one of my favorite fabrics for a baby boy quilt. I love the blue and brown, and I think the patterns are too cute. And strip quilts are also one of my favorite types to make. They are simple, relatively quick and easy to quilt on my home machine with a semi-straight line. They are also very forgiving. I had several major puckers on this one while quilting. But after washing it up, it looked just fine. (I’m also not a perfectionist with quilting, which is worth mentioning.)
I hope my friend and her baby boy love it as much as I do.

I really love that! Great job! I also like that it’s not super “boy-ish”, it could match a little girl’s room too, or heck anywhere in a house! Looks great 🙂

I love strip quilts and theses colors are beautiful. Awesome job, Kim – and with Mr. Henry to boot! One of these days I’m going to make a quilt. So probably in 20 years when the kids are in college and I have time on my hands again.

I really like everything about this quilt. My fav part is the quilting. I have a strip quilt waiting for me to quilt and you just solved my problem!
Your little guy is so cute! He’s really plumping up too!!! Both of my boys were 5 pounders and were early as well. Your pictures of Henry have reminded me so much of when mine were that little. : )
I have really enjoyed your blog for the last couple years. Your home renovation/decorating is wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

Kim you are amazing! I can barely sew a straight line on my machine. I thought I was Martha Stewart when I awkwardly hemmed a curtain last week. I’m so impressed with your skills woman!

Wow you inspire me to learn to use the sewing machine hubs bought me LAST Christmas. Sigh. I honestly can’t even figure out how to ‘cut’ my fabric in strait lines much less dozens exactly the same. Any ‘Kim Wisdom” you could lend?
