3 hours. That’s how long each of the four curtains in the nursery took to make. Apiece. After getting everything cut.
That’s a long time for this little momma, and a bit longer than expected. So, I hope our little man loves them. Because my poor pregnancy body was telling me I should have taken it a little slower. And my logic was telling me it probably would have been cheaper to purchase them. (Which is always a bit of a downer after spending all kinds of time on a project.)
But, with those little rays of sunshine, I am really happy the curtains are finished and thrilled with how they turned out. I especially love having the closet curtains, to hide the mess within.
A few notes, for those of you who are interested:
- The fabric is Dwell Studio Bella Porta Twilight (on sale right now at fabric.com for less than I paid). It’s definitely not inexpensive, but it’s a really nice fabric and a great pattern. I think it’s worth the added expense.
- I used ribbon tabs on the back of the curtain, which is a simple way to finish the curtains. (Find the tutorial at Welcome to Heardmont.)
- I lined the curtains with blackout liner. This is the first time I’ve lined curtains – it did take a little longer and they were a bit heavier to get through the sewing machine, but I think it will be worth it to have an extra dark room. It truly makes the room black when they are shut.
I think the fabric adds a nice pop to the room. Now, it’s just time to work on everything else on the list.
What do you think?

OMG those look amazing! They really make the space. Well worth it. Thanks for the tutorial link I might try to take some as well in the future (though I’m noting how many hours it took you).
jen @ homeinthecountry says
They look great – and you wil be so so happy with the blackout liner! I just ordered some of that fabric in charcoal for window treatments for our office.
Leigh says
Looks awesome!! I’ve never lined curtains either…I’m too lazy. I also never knew you could make ribbon tabs on on the back. Again because I’m lazy, mine are all the type that require clip hooks.
Jenny @ Anything Pretty says
Can i just say that fabric is amazing? Worth every penny. I was drooling over it for the basement but after I calculated how much yardage I would need, I just could not do it. So I will just have to live vicariously through you. Also I am thinking about writing a post about how much I hate sewing curtains, Really it sucks and it is boring. Know that IKEA fabric I bought with you over a year ago. Yep just finished. Stupid boring curtains:).

Those curtains totally make the room. Don’t bother finishing anything else on your list besides “birth baby”. Seriously awesome fabric and you’re gonna wanna kiss yourself for making black-out liners. I have navy blue curtains in Gabe’s room and they do a pretty good job but I like it as cave-like as possible. Good job mama!
Mindy@Fslblog says
They look great Kim! I’ve had projects that after I said it would have been easier to buy, but it’s still a nice feeling when you look at them and know that you MADE them.
The Atwoods says
You are I are both due in June, and we’re both having little BOYS! 🙂 And now that I’m catching up on your nursery progress, I see we’re both using navy blue! 🙂 I love the fabric you chose…I think it’ll go great with your nautical theme!
Debbie @ My Little Mess says
You did an amazing job on the curtains!! I am always too scared to tackle sewing curtains so consider me jealous!
Nicole @My Thrafty Life says
Oh, they look great! And of course your little man will love them, mom made them! We have blackout curtains in our bedroom and we LOVE them. I mean it really turns it into a cave. I love how you can just crack the curtains a bit if you want to let in sunlight. I can’t wait to see what you are working on next, you are a busy momma bee!
Mrs. 5C says
I LOOOOOOVE them!!! They’re totally worth paying extra for. You rock, Mama!!! 🙂

I love them and love watching the room take shape. Just be cautious of the cords hanging down from the bamboo shades(which look great by the way!). The first time mom in me as well gets freaked out by stuff like that 🙂

I love the curtains! I can tell already that I’m just going to love that room! Great job, even if it took way too long!
Martina says
The curtains turned out great! They really add some great detail to the room. 🙂 Though I’ll have to admit you’re scaring me a little about the time commitment! (I have plans to make 2 panels for our dining room).
If it sets your mind at ease, I was quoted well OVER $300 for two, standard size, unlined panels (which is why I decided to make them myself instead).

They look so great!!!!!! I love the pattern! Good job! Now, I think you should take some well deserved naps all week!
I have to line curtains with blackout fabric in both Joseph’s new big kid room and in Juliana’s new nursery… I’ve been putting it off with other much more fun sewing projects. Oy. Not looking forward to it. However, with the inspiration of your and 5C’s successes, I’ll definitely have to get my rear in gear.
Chelsea @ {twotwentyone} says
They turned out great! Sorry they were such a time commitment, but at least they’re done.
Brandi @ His Shabby Her Chic says

You could have bought them, but they might not have been exactly what you wanted, and I’m sure these are. I love love love the fabric too. Your little guy is one lucky little boy!

I think they are incredible. I love love love them almost as much as I love love love you! You will have the crib sheets this week and I can’t wait to see how it all starts to come together! Make it a Marvelous Monday my little angel!
Tara @ Tara Being Tara says
I totally want to validate how much it must have sucked to make those. BUT… they look awesome!!!!
Amanda @ Serenity Now says
They are gorgeous!!! So crisp looking. The black-out lining was genius…I swear by black-out liners. Add a night light in a corner where the it won’t shine right on baby, and you are set. It really helps them learn when it’s sleep time vs. awake time.

It looks beautiful! You did a great job!

You did an awesome job, Kim!! I love the fabric you chose – it works really well in the room. You’ll be glad you took the time to line the curtains and make them yourself if/when they grant you 30 minutes more sleep in the mornings, I’m sure!
Glad the ribbon tabs worked for you!

Sewing is just like any other DIY project – costs twice as much as you expect and takes three times as long!
But – you get exactly what you want in exactly the right size – total win.
They look fabulous – I’ll have to try that ribbon tab on the back method next time I need curtains.
vanessa says
When I read those first lines I was like 3 hours man she is fast! Well at least you finished them and they were worth it because they are beautiful!!

They turned out so good!

They look fantastic they are a labor of love that’s for sure. I’m still to afraid to attempt curtains since I’m positive I’ll measure and cut wrong…
