Wow. It’s almost been a year since we’ve closed on our house. When I’m done with school (NEXT WEEK! WOO!), I’m planning to make a page with easy links to each week of the renovation. I’m sure you’ve been waiting with baited breath.
But, this week… ย we made more process. And we’re getting there.
Ryan began to work on tile backsplash this week. Which I’m loving. I picked white subway tile with grey grout. I also got the window trim painted.
Ryan could do without all the tile cutting. But it will all be worth it in the end. Right?
We did decide to paint the interior of the front door black. And Ryan painted it for me, which makes this my favorite painting project ever. I love it.
We also got some more new furniture this week and started filling up the living room.
A few chairs, coffee table, a couple ottomans…. it’s coming together. But, I’m having hard time figuring out how to set up the room. It’s really long but not very wide. It looks kind of dark in this picture, but we’ll work on that.
The other progress this week – this week we finished another coat of paint on the floors and walls in the basement, trim painting in the master bedroom closet and lots more cleaning.
And that, my friends, is the week in review.
What do you think?

Ohhh, I am going to totally look like I am copying off you! I really want to do the white tile with the gray grout when I do the kitchen and I have been obsessing over painting the inside of the front door black! Not sure why, either… Everything at the last house was all white… Now I want to paint everything I can get my hands on black. Weird. I love your door, it’s so pretty and authentic.

You folks do fine work, both in design and execution. I like your choices in trim, beadboard and so on. Anyone can make a box to live in, it’s all in the details, of which, you folks are doing great.

Everything is looking great, Kim! Let me know when Tootie and I can come over, curl up and watch a movie in one of those comfy-looking chairs!

The chairs and coffee table look too large and chunky for the small space that they’re in. Love the couch though.

Soooo, are you guys looking at your next house yet?? ๐
Love the subway tile and black door! Great choices! And it sounds like Ryan loved installing that backsplash so he can just head on over and work on mine for me…

I know I say it every week, but I am still SO dang impressed with the work you guys have put into your home. I think you guys are so talented!

I so adore your black door! What a great decision – and one that I never would have thought of. It adds so much charm!
I’m coming to visit when this is all done. Mmkay? Great.

Wow, you guys are so close! Looks awesome. Love the subway tile. Love the countertops.

Looking AWESOME!! Love that tile!! Only tip I have with the furniture is to use an app online to do a floorplan? Or kick it old school with some graph paper – that’s what I always do. Something fun about doing to-scale graph paper furniture arrangements! Can’t wait to see how it ends up and how you go about it. ๐

Looking good! Your subway tile backsplash rocks!

I also think that you should move the couch into the room, and the chairs to the end by the window…they visually take up more space than the couch, I think. I love that subway tile with gray grout, that is a challenge since you can see every imperfection in grout widths…which I’m sure you don’t have, since you guys are DIY masters!!

Super duper love the white subway with gray grout….I’m all over it. That’s what I chose for my tub surround!! You guys rock.

Subway tile makes my heart go pitter pat. It’s going to be so beautiful once it’s all finished!! And black was the perfect color for the interior of your door! It’s all looking so great!

The door looks great. As does the backsplash. I wish we had done a different grout, oh well. I really liked tiling, but I was too scared of the wetsaw to try that. Is that furniture of the living room in the other house?
Jenn @ Handmade Homebody says
I love the subway tiles! Ryan’s tile cutting is definitely paying off. Your living room looks so cozy with furniture. I always enjoy seeing how much you two accomplish every week!

The backsplash looks awesome! Well worth the time needed to cut the tile. Everything is looking good!

One way you could brighten up the room would be to paint the fireplace white like the YHL crew did here: http://www.younghouselove.com/2011/06/fireplace-happenings/

Grey grout for the subway tile is excellent for the kitchen. I am still dreaming of having subway tile in our kitchen one day.
Random question. I know you mentioned once you got chalk board markers where did you get those? I am not having any luck finding them.

It is looking amazing Kim!! I bet you could probably look back at your to-do list from week 1 and feel some serious satisfaction over what you’ve accomplished.
I liked the idea above about the chairs under the window with an small side table between them.
I can’t wait until you move in and we get to see more decorating posts like this one ๐

You guys kick ass enough said. I can’t wait to have the chance to come actually see it once I’m up in the area. You know since I’ve already invited myself :o)
PS: You can come up and stay in our underground casa anytime. You know once its built.

I’m already drooling over your kitchen and can’t wait to see it finished! Our living room is long and narrow too, with several focal points–picture window, wood stove, tv… I’m still trying to figure it out!
Emily says
Your house is super lovely- I’m drooling over everything you’ve done so far!!
One furniture suggestion (our house has the same problem- long and narrow living room)- you might consider flipping the chairs and couch. Make a little seating vignette under the window- maybe an end table between the two chairs? And then put the couch across from them- maybe a thin sofa table behind it? Also I love the coffee table but it *might* be too big for the space (I’m currently battling this same problem)- have you thought about something smaller, maybe a round shape?
I also like the idea of painting the fireplace white- that would definitely brighten things up.
Loving your house- I look forward to Thursdays on your blog every week!! ๐
