Some of you have asked about the garden –
Are we doing a vegetable garden with the renovation going on?
Which house would we plant at?
What veggies and herbs are we planting?
So, here’s the answer.
We did plant vegetables and herbs this year. I don’t think we could go without it now that we’ve been gardening for a few years. Growing your own food is really very fulfilling (and quite addicting). This is our third year gardening (check out years one and two) and it’s the year I’ve spent the least amount of time thinking about it, planning what to plant, scheduling seed-starting and planting…
But that’s okay. I think I’m finally chilling out and realizing that people have been growing things for millions or billions or trillions of years, for goodness sakes. Just throw some things in the ground, add some water and watch it grow.
And because we have a few other things going on, like renovating a house and mentally preparing myself for moving and taking a few classes and working, this year’s garden planning has been quite chill. Especially since I’m rarely ever accused of being ‘chill.’
So, here’s the scoop:
We planted at both houses. At our house, we cut the size of the garden by 1/3, to make it manageable and look nice when we sell it.
We planted grass in the area that held Ryan’s corn, potatoes and onions last year. Although it’s humorous, because we have volunteers coming up over there, too – potatoes, corn and tomato plants are sprouting in the grass.
In the two small garden beds, I planted a variety of tomatoes and peppers, and radishes. The other bed is nearly covered in strawberry plants. The hope is that the area looks nice and manageable to whoever decides to buy our home.
I also planted a few herbs (and some marigolds) in our deck flower boxes, which look really pretty. It’s also super practical for us because I use a lot of herbs and we plan to be in our house for at least a while longer.
At our new house, we planted more, in hopes that we will be moved in by late-summer. Ryan planted his corn, potatoes, onions and radishes. I planted herbs (basil x 2, cilantro, rosemary, dill, lemon balm, parsley)
Lots of tomatoes.
Lots of peppers (which I started from seed).
We’re a little nervous about the new garden. There isn’t nearly the sunlight in our new yard as we have in our current garden. We’ll see how it goes… and you’ll be the first to know.
What about you? How’s your garden growing?

Love the garden pics and the inspiration. It really is addicting. We are in the middle of expanding our garden to be about 3 times the size it is now. It is a lot of work, but hopefully, will be very rewarding in the end. Yep, very rewarding or very weedy. It will definitely be one of those.

We have not been able to plant much yet due to the crazy wet weather that we have been having. I am hoping to get some more things in this weekend.

I’m still trying to convince JEGs to let me get one of those topsy turvy tomato things… Next summer we plan to do a lot of outside work on the house, so hopefully I will have a pretty garden to blog about!

My garden appears on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Some people call it a Farmer’s Market..I prefer garden that requires no weeding.

I love how you’ve made pathways between each of the beds for yourself! That’s fantastic!

I think you were wise to do two gardens. Now you have the best of both worlds. ๐ Love that you did the peppers from “scratch.” ๐

I was wondering how you were going to manage two gardens this year….sounds like a great plan! We are downsizing this year because of baby which makes me sad but I am trying to be realistic about what is manageable. I am so impressed with those pepper plants. Seed and I have never been successful together. Can’t wait to see it all grow!

your gardening posts always make me itchy to get out there and make my own garden! i’m sure it will be fun to really build your garden in the new house once you are all moved in ๐ also, too funny about the “volunteers” ๐

I’m amazed by everything you two do! I still haven’t managed to get a garden going at all this year. BUT I’m thinking of snagging at least a couple plants from the nursery and hoping to get something from them. And still hoping for next year….

I love that you do this! And I think it’s great that you thought about making the garden look manageable for potential buyers – such a good idea to have it there if they want it, but not have it so big that it freaks them out if they’re not gardeners.
