In addition to Ryan’s winemaking adventures, we’ve tried a few other new things in the kitchen lately.
The good
And The Pioneer Woman’s Restaurant-Style Salsa is my new favorite. So very yummy. (And I was able to use tomatoes I canned last year from the garden.)
Ryan also made these stuffed jalapenos. I really liked them, and that’s saying something because I despise bacon. With a passion. Betcha didn’t know that about me. I do. Hate.bacon. But these were good, even with the bacon.
And did I tell you about this awesome way to preserve cilantro. Sometimes you just have way too much to eat in the course of a few days. This is seriously awesome…. I froze it and then to use it, I mixed it in with black beans and rice. It’s so delicious!
The bad
I’ve also had a few mishaps lately. Like – Oh, dear. I tried to make homemade peanut butter. Inedible. I don’t know what I did wrong. But, oh my. Ryan has peanut butter every day for lunch and he couldn’t even eat mine. Neither could I.
And the bean burgers I’ve been so excited to make (and subsequently bought a food processor to try) were more like bean dip. Not really the consistency of burgers.
No use trying to grill them.
Well, I suppose there’s always ups and downs, right?
What is your biggest kitchen disaster?

OK now I have another salsa recipe to try. We were just talking the other day that no matter how many different brands we try, nothing can compare to homemade salsa. Come on tomatoes, get growing!
It stinks that your PB and burgers were a fail….but I loved that you shared them anyway!
Amy@My Front Porch says
You don’t like BACON? What kind of American are you?? ๐ That cilantro freezing idea is GENIUS! I can’t tell you how much cilantro I’ve wasted because I couldn’t use it all up in time!
vanessa says
I got a Ninja blender last week and it has a recipe for peanut butter and I was wanting to try it. My husband eats pb every. single. day. too. We’ll see how it turns out.

Love me some bacon and so do my kids (14, 12 and 8) but the other night I put together an egg, bread, cheese and bacon bake and it was the worst. Seriously awful. May is an awfully busy month with soccer, swim, lax and I try hard to cook more times than not during the week. Should have ordered out that night:) I’m probably 15 years older than you living in a suburb of Detroit. Not your target market but I enjoy your blog.

I’m not sure I can trust someone who doesn’t like bacon, but I suppose I could give you the benefit of the doubt. Of course, you did teach me that I can freeze cilantro… Which is fantastic. So, I’ll just overlook your bacon problem. ๐
Mrs. Adventure says
I swear sometimes it takes forever to read your posts because I always click ever link :o) you always have so many good ones – I guess a THANK YOU is in order!
Jenn says
The salsa looks soooooo yummy! I love PW’s recipes – have you tried her mac & cheese?
It’s kinda funny that you showed the muffin tin of pesto, because I was just talking to a friend last week who suggested freezing pesto in ice trays! Such a great idea.
Rita/Fighting Off Frumpy says
I literally LOL’ed at the bean burgers … they look like piles of poo there on the foil. ๐ But it’s okay because if you’ve been reading my blog long, you know that I have a knack for making things that look like feces. Namely desserts. Which I think is even worse than bean burgers.
They might have been good mixed up with some of that salsa and that cilantro, though, and served with some chips! Yum yum!
And … you don’t like BACON?!?!? I’m not sure we can be friends … ๐
Amanda @ Serenity Now says
Love the cilantro idea!! The bean burgers were a teensy bit scary. I once blew up a biscuit in the microwave. :s
Leigh says
Oh dear, those bean burgers on the grill made me laugh- sorry. You should try the bean dip I posted early in the spring. I wonder if you can save other herbs the same way? My basil is going crazy, I just froze two bags of pesto last night but it would be nice to just freeze herbs.

my eyes, my eyes!
did i see hate in bold print…and talking about my beloved bacon? when in doubt, wrap it in bacon…i have actually blogged those words. and also, add cheese. what is it about bacon that offends you?
Mrs. 5C says
YOU DON’T LIKE BACON????
Really??? I’ve been puzzling over this all afternoon. You are weird. But I still love you.
Have you tried burned bacon? Really??
Cilantro ice cubes are a FANTASTIC FREAKING IDEA!!! That… is impressive.
Your aversion to bacon… not impressive. ๐
Amanda @ Little House on the Corner says
I’m glad you shared your downs, because that makes me feel better! At least the peanut butter resembled peanut butter…right?
I love homemade salsa, too, but I have yet to try making my own.
One of my biggest kitchen disasters was trying to make homemade marshmallows last Christmas. You may or may not have read that one. Anyway, it was a nightmare. I guess it happens to the best of us! ๐
Jessica @ This Blessed Life says
awww, those black bean blobs made me laugh! good for you for posting your failures as well as the successes. thanks for the salsa link! sounds awesome!

I once decided to make a roast in the crockpot…didn’t look up a recipe, just threw the meat in there with potatoes, carrots, and celery with seasonings. Half-way through leaving it to cook, I thought I should add some red wine.
The worst tasting carrots and potatoes and celery. Ever. The meat was eh.. but really dry. Note to self…recipes are there for a reason=)
And I’ve had a mishap with bean patties too… my looked just about the same.=)
lyndsay @ Mr and Mrs says
i LOVE PW and her recipes :). I have to try this one! And THANK YOU for the cilantro freezing info…we have cilantro currently growing in our garden and i know i want to freeze a bunch for the winter ๐
ThyHandHathProvided says
I’m so glad you liked the cilantro sauce! Your PW salsa looks amazing….
Keri says
I tried making black bean brownies and they were so gross!
I can’t believe your pb didn’t turn out! You should try making honey roasted pb! Just put a bunch of honey roasted peanuts, about a T of oil, and a smidge of salt in your food processor and let it buzz away! It is such a treat!
Liz @ It's Great To Be Home says
Ha, at least you tried with those bean burgers! And woman, how can you hate BACON?!?!? I’m not sure we can be friends. ๐ I would like some of that salsa, though. ๐
Anonymous says
You should just mash the beans up with a fork till they are paste like, then add some cooked brown rice. It’ll help the burger stay together more and not be so running!
LizzieBeth says
ok Confession Time: the stuffed japs kinda look like bugs to me. Meh.
I am dying over here with the burgers. I tried to make a similar recipe from Rachel Ray and it was a complete disaster! As soon as they hit the grill, the meat started dripping through the grates! We all have our mishaps ๐
The salsa looks great though! Nomy nom noms!

darn those bean burgers! They look hard to make!! my biggests oops in the kithcne was when I was 11 making peanut butter cookies, I used pepper on accident – the cookies were so yucky!! Nothings topped that yet! lol
Rachel says
Hahaha, the bean burgers look delightful ๐ Why is the peanut butter so bad? It looks pretty normal to me . . . is it bacon-flavored, is that the problem? ๐ I’m going to have to try that salsa . . . ooh, it looks gooooood!
Rachel @ Maybe Matilda
Cindy @The Flipping Couple says
Haha! Maybe they didn’t make for actual burgers but it looks like a tasty dip. Yummers.
I need to try PW’s salsa because that looks so good!! And what a great way to save cilantro. I’ll have to try that next time before my fridge turns it into green mush.
The Brick Cottage says
LOL, the bean burgers are cracking me up. I wonder what went wrong with your peanut butter? My husband also eats a PB sandwich every day for lunch (well, usually for him it’s two sandwiches). And I am so going to try to preserve cilantro like that–it’s good to know that it tastes as good as it looks.
You and Ryan should try peanut butter stuffed into jalapenos the next time you make some. They’re weirdly good and a fun twist on stuffed jalapenos.
Kristen @ Miss Prissy Paige says
I haven’t tried the Pioneer Woman’s salsa but I hear its delicious. And all that cilantro? Yummy!

I’ve made bean burgers that have turned out similar to that, I cook them on a griddle and they turn out okay. But yeah, you probably would have been better off pulling out some tortilla chips! ๐
Jordan@the2seasons says
The salsa looks amazing! I have burned some things in the oven here and there but so far nothing major.
