Lucky number 33 comes to a close. Slow and steady wins the race, right?
We still made some progress despite other things taking our time, like sewing pants and spending time with Addy. All totally worth it.
Ryan’s been working on the bathroom. It’s coming right along. I’m sure you are about tired of all this talk about the bathroom. But, well… sorry.
This week, it was time for trim and beadboard-look panels.
We used the original trim boards and just added the panels.
We had the panels cut in half (4 feet tall) at Lowe’s. Even though we have the equipment at home, it’s so much simpler to get the big boards cut at Lowe’s. Love that service.
Don’t be too proud. Chase that red vest down, friends! It’s a sanity saver. Ryan still had to do some cutting (old houses are never level), but it’s much simpler than cutting the full 8-foot board.
(And in case you are wondering, I’m the red-vest-chaser in our relationship. Ryan does all the major work and I do things like asking for help in the hardware store and getting instructions for floor installation and having boards cut. Give and take.)
I’m really liking this bathroom.
While the original trim is grimy and not very pretty, it’s solid and in really good shape, all things considering. It will clean up really nicely with a little white page and the beadboard panels.
The vanity is in place and we picked up (the wrong size) countertop today. The vanity was a hand-me-down from my in-laws. It’s a nice piece. I’m thinking I’ll paint it black.
We did a quick budget breakdown tonight after buying the medicine cabinet and vanity, and it looks like we’ll slide in under $2,500 for the entire bathroom, including all the re-done plumbing, drywall, fixtures, flooring, etc.
I don’t know… that doesn’t seem too high to me, I guess. The budget was definitely lower in our current green bathroom, but we splurged with higher-cost tile and lighting in this one, and had to re-do all the plumbing and such.
What do you think? What’s the going rate for a new (gorgeous) bathroom nowadays?
Outdoors, at last
In addition to the bathroom, we also tried to get most of the leaves in the yard cleaned up before it got cold and started raining again. Unfortunately, it snowed sooner than we got everything cleaned up in the fall.
So, Ryan bought a mulcher to chop up the multitude of leaves. We’ll use the chopped leaves as mulch in the vegetable garden.
There was very little grass in the yard last year (besides the areas that Ryan seeded). Mostly weeds. The leaves killed most of it off, so Ryan took the opportunity to seed it now. (Let’s all say a prayer it stays warm enough that the seeds take. It’s pretty early in our area to be planting grass.)
So here’s the inside of the fence now. A nice big area for the puggies. Who would rather be inside anyways.
A blank slate. Something promising about this, right?
So, what do you think?
I haven’t updated the full house list in a while, but I hope to have more to update next week.

Love that cutting service too! But I gotta admit…I make Derek go ask.
Love the beadboard and I think that vanity will look fab in black. But you know me and my love for painting things black, so I may be a little biased.
And you should be so proud of that bathroom budget. So cheap yet so awesome….go Kim and Ryan!

That bathroom is going to look crazy, crazy awesome! I can’t wait to see the painted & finished beadboard & trim! I also think the that the vanity painted black would be perfect with you pretty tiled floor!
I’ll be doing some red vest chasing of my own tomorrow for some mdf pantry shelving. I am so looking forward to not cutting a giant 4×8 on my own. Thanks for reminding me about the service! It’s going to save so much time!

IT’s so great that you are doing the work yourselves. We do 99% of our renos ourselves, sometimes we need help with a project. but, doing it yourself saves loads of money.

I can’t wait to see that finished bathroom 🙂 It’s going to look amazing!

I think that fence just looks amazing!! What company did you hire to have that done =)
Our Little Beehive says
The bathroom is looking great, the beadboard is going to look awesome when you have it all shiny and painted. Can’t wait to see the next update.
We did a whole new lawn last year by aerating, then seeding and spreading 5″ of mulch then seeding again. It seemed to have killed all the weeds. Here’s hoping they stay away! Good luck with yours.

I sure hope slow and steady wins the race! That’s definitely our approach, though we’re more slow than we are steady!
I’m excited for you (and not tired of seeing bathroom updates at all). It’s coming together so nicely, and it will be so classic and inviting when you’re all done. Which won’t be long from now!

Excited to see what you’re going to do outside 🙂

Can’t wait to see the bathroom.

I love the classic look of the bathroom. I have no actual knowledge, but I think $2500 to redo a bathroom (especially so extensively) is great!
Mrs. Chic says
I think your budget is awesome!!! On those DIY bathroom shows the people always spend a crazy amount of money and most of the times the bathroom look lame (I’m being honest!)
Your looks great, everything is well thought out – for sure a black vanity will look amazing in there with the tile, I’m already – thinking what shower curtain you’ll wanna use. I’m know i’m getting ahead of myself! oh well
Cindy @The Flipping Couple says
I can’t wait to see what you do with that yard!! (Fence still looks marvelous, by the way)
I think $2500 sounds really good for a COMPLETE re-do with all the plumbing and everything. Some people spend that much on a vanity!
I can’t wait to see that beadboard painted. I’d come help you paint it if I was closer, that’s how excited I am. Is that creepy??

Your bathroom is really coming along! Can’t wait to see it all finished. It’s going to be fabulous! $2,500 is really good for a whole new bathroom! We’re budgeting a lot more than that for both of our bathroom remodels (one is a master with two sinks and separate tub and shower though).
Biz says
Yeah! It’s almost complete! That has to be an exciting feeling!

Oh and one more thing- I also have to be the one to ask for help at the store. 😀
Amanda- Hip House Girl says
Mmmm I just keep staring at your bathroom. Seriously. I love it. I love everything you guys have picked out, and I think that vanity will be awesome painted black! The slant in the shower ceiling/wall is actually turning out to be quite charming as well! And yeah $2500 doesn’t sound bad for a bathroom, especially with plumbing work and stuff. DIY saves a ton of dough.

i’ve been reading through your blog and am amazed at the amount of work you guys put out. everything is so nice and well done. i’ve learned so much and even tried a recipe. i’m not a blogger but i love to read all of the diy and craft stuff. thanks for sharing. i can’t wait to see the rest of your renovation.
Mike and Katrina @HA says
$2,500 sounds great! We were talking with a casting person to be on a DIY bathroom renovation show and they asked what our budget was. I didn’t really know but I guessed $5-7k (for a gut an refinish including getting a new tub and window). They assured me it would cost $12-15k to redo a bathroom. That’s higher than our budget to finish a 1,000 sqft basement! Am I going to use golden tiles?? But then I hear bout $50k bathrooms, I just don’t know what costs so much! I think $2500 is a great deal for the amount of changes you did. Great job finding deals!
Liz @ It's Great To Be Home says
I think $2,500 for a brand new bathroom is AMAZING!! You guys are my heroes, officially.
Miss Effie says
According to the KBA — average bath remodel is $20,000. Yep! 5 digits.
You did fantastic!!!
Emily says
I cannot wait to see your backyard! And lowes cutting boards for us pretty much the only way b and i get along when doing projects together. We were just there last weekend getting boards cut for our banquette.
Suzanne says
I think $2,500 sounds extremely reasonable for an entirely redone bathroom.
But really, I am DESPERATE to know how much a mulcher cost and where you got it. We have tons of leaves and have to haul them all to the dump ourselves (where they are turned into mulch) which means it almost never gets done. A mulcher sounds like the PERFECT solution!
Kristi says
How exciting! That bathroom is really coming together. And I would say that $2500 for a complete bathroom reno is a very good price.
Jordan@the2seasons says
Wow you have done a lot for not much money I am impressed and it is looking great. I agree with painting the sink stand black that will look great!
Lucky Girl says
That bathroom is going to be gorgeous Kim! And I think that $2500 sounds great. We spent between $1500 and $2000 on our bathroom over the winter and that was without changing the flooring, toilet/toilet plumbing or the sink/sink plumbing – so kudos to you both!!
