My friend, Amanda at Serenity Now, is hosting a “Show me the Progress” blog party today. Show me the progress? Well, if that title doesn’t speak to me, I don’t know what would. Our home is a continual work-in-progress. (Check out the down-low of all our befores and afters here.) And, I was actually planning to post about our bedroom update today and ask for opinions anyhow. So, I guess it’s perfect timing.
There is definitely progress being made in the bedroom. (And, get your mind outta the gutter.) Our master bedroom is undergoing yet another bedding swap.
If you are keeping count, this is the fourth bedding swap in two years (although I really consider it one of several partial swaps, because the quilt, and possibly some of the throw pillows, will stay).
YIKES! The bedroom has come a long way from here.
To refresh your memory, here’s what it looked like most recently.
I love the quilt. I love the colors. But, I’m not thrilled with the pillows, particularly the pillows I carried over from the last bedding.
Plus, I realized that I’m attracted to rooms with white bedding. And the quilt was not nearly warm enough for Madam Cold-All-The-Time. And, I didn’t love all of the pillows anyhow. So, I went on a search for a down comforter. I don’t “do” duvets, bad past experiences. So, I decided to use a white comforter and our current chocolate quilt to get a new look.
I found the down comforter at Tuesday Morning on clearance. It’s warm, comfortable and Ryan-approved. We really like it. And, it was so inexpensive, I couldn’t NOT buy it.
Now, I’m having trouble putting it all together. So, I figured, since you all are here anyway, you can weigh in. I need your help.
Here are rooms that I like and that led me to realize that a white comforter is what I wanted in the room. I also added my notes about how the bed was made and what pillows were used.
(Quilt underneath, tucked with the down comforter on top.)
(Quilt folded over the end of the bed. Only one contrasting pillow.)
(Quilt folded simple with contrasting pillows)
(Folded over the end of the bed with a variety of fun, patterned pillows)
(Simple fold with only a few contrasting pillows)
I think I like this one the best:
And, with that – here are the questions I need you to answer..
Note: I have not purchased any pillows, and I would prefer to avoid buying anything major (and I know pillows can be pricy). However, I am open to making pillows, which would mean I could buy inexpensive fabric or use what I have.
QUESTION 1: Which quilt-comforter combo do you prefer?
B. Comforter under, quilt folded in half on top
C. Comforter under, quilt folded narrowly
D. SOMETHING ELSE, ENTIRELY!
QUESTION 2: What should I do about pillows?
This is open-ended. Do I need two more king-sized pillows in white or another color? Do you like the three throw pillows or one throw pillow above? Should I make more pillows?
I also have these small fabric pieces that are the perfect size for 12 inch throw pillows, so keep this in mind. Plus, I have the old pillows. I can use the fabrics from the blue silk material for pillows.
Okay, friends. I’m counting on you.
I’m all verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves.
And, go check out more progress at Serenity Now

For me I choose an A. It looks neatly and the colour fit well.

okay, I am way behind on this and didn’t read the previous comments, so I’m sorry if I’m repeating something someone already suggested! I like the bed with a quilt pulled up (but folded back hotel-style at the top of the bed — top sheet too) then the duvet/comforter folded in thirds at the bottom. this especially works for me because I am always cold and my husband is always hot. with the down on top, it’s easier for him to toss it off if he gets hot without tossing the quilt too. just my two cents!

Hi – I’m new to your blog, and I like it!
Your have such a huge bed – here’s what I would do. Buy two more regular bed pillows (euro or king) I would leave the quilt at the foot of the bed, maybe bring it done a bit. Add the your decortive pillows you want to make using Printed fabric – it will break up all the solid colors and add in one more color – darker or lighter for added interest

I’m sure that you’ve already made your decision but, you did ask for opinions. 🙂 I say, do what’s most practical. We throw the comforter on top bc I use it and C doesn’t. This way he can throw it off. As far as the pillows go, again I say go with what you use. We have 6 because I sleep with 4 (yes, 4) and C needs two. 4+2= a lot of pillows, but it works.

1. Option B! Agree w/ Michael that it gives that boutique hotel vibe. So luxe & chic. Perhaps fold the fabulous chocolate quilt down on itself one more time?
2. I vote to layer 2 more king-sized pillows in front of your existing ones for some depth & plushness. Then center one throw pillow in front that has a coordinating pattern OR just put one of the your chic rectangluar ones in front OR add a single patterned bolster pillow in front.
3. Have I confused you yet.
4. You’re awesome.

Someone else may have already mentioned it, but beware the white comforter with no cover around Franco. I am assuming that your dogs do spend some time on your bed (I know my brats sure do) and Gidget took it upon herself to eat a corner of our down comforter one day. Feathers everywhere… Plus it got FILTHY. Now we only use it with a duvet cover.

Question 1 – B
I do think that you need some shams and also a few throw pillows. I think I’d make shams in the chocolate brown color and do the accent pillows in the blue. (I like the one already on your bed.)
Meg says
I like A, but I might be the only one! I also know that it’s the least practical, so scrap my opinion. I agree with everyone that big fluffy pillows will do the trick. But really, it’s a cute room. L.O.V.E. the headboard? Is that DIY or purchased? Either way, it’s totally fabulous and I’m very jealous!

Hi Kim,
If you’re anti duvet, I would say go with the brown quilt folded in half on top. BTW- what is it that you’re against with a duvet? When you used one before did the comforter get bunched up inside?
As for pillows, I would join 3 of your 12×12 panels as the face of a long bolster/lumber pillow to go between your big pillows and a smaller throw pillow.
The room is looking great! Good luck!

I LOVE that yellow room and I love how the blanket (quilt, whatever it is called) is folded at the end of the bed. I love how it is not too many yellow pillows on the bed.
I love the yellow room. You should do exactly the same thing with the bed.
Heather @ McKinney Living says
Oooooh white bedrooms make me weak in the knees! I adore option B and love the idea of more big white pillows. I LOVE that monogram and all of your color choices!
Holly says
I like B. I think you need a couple of bigger (European) pillows behind, like in the picture of the one like best.
Then maybe a long bolster pillow with an accent pillow in front of it, like in the picture with the green ceiling.
So, big white Euro pillows at the back, then your sleeping pillows (or you could reverse those two), then the long pillow, then accent pillow.
Kim @ NewlyWoodwards says
Thanks for all the advice, friends. I’ve read everyone, and I”m thinking you all should charge me. (But, don’t)
I’m dying that you all recommended Euro Shams. I had two and hated them. So, I actually sold them, with coordinating shams, in a yard sale. HA! But, I do like the idea of more pillows. So, I’m gonna get cracking on it. I’ll let you know how it ends up. I love the idea of a longer front pillow. It will be much easier to keep those pillows on the bed than having a ton of throw pillows. =)
Thanks again for your tips and advice. I really appreciate it.

We are in the process of changing our bedding as well…the 4th set we’ve had since moved in three years ago. Blue pillows…Definitely.
Michael - Innkeeper says
I like B. hands down. looks luxurious. like a nice hotel. I like the way you have the pillow in A the best. some sense of order.
I would also get another set of regular king pillows. two sets seem best.
I know this is sort of off topic, but more than pillow I think two lamps, one for each bedside table would make a huge difference. more so than pillows. I know it may not be in the budget.. but. I found these horrible orange ceramic lamp bases at goodwill once. $6 for both. spray painted them high gloss white. got some lamp shades at wal-mart. and they look like $100 lamps.
i do love the brown and blue combo!

I like comforter choice B, but if you’re just taking it off every night C might be easier to deal with day-to-day.
As for pillows, I think the one single rectangle get s a bit lost on the big bed. What about 5 or so 12-inch square pillows you already have fabric for, lined up on an angle across the front?
Kristen says
I like choice B, that is how I have my bed and yes you need more pillows..
longbrakeliving says
I like the quilt on top, but folded maybe into thirds? I have my quilt fold back on itself, so if I need extra warmth, I can just pull it up without having to reach all the way to the bottom of the bed. As far as pillows, I would go with two more King Sized pillows (or one large pillow that runs the length of the bed) and one throw pillow, but larger than one pictured, maybe in a patterned fabric? If you want to go solid, I might go with 5 throw pillows — three just doesn’t seem to look like enough to me (but one does, go figure).
Robin says
Hope I can help.
Question #1: I vote “B”
Question #2: Pillows are a very personal thing. You have to go with what you like. If you like alot of pillows go with something like your favorite photo. Two sets of white with a small pillow in front with a splash of color.
If you don’t like alot of pillows(like me)only add one accent pillow. Maybe one in a long narrow version that can be centered on the bed (I love that look)
Kasey at Thrifty Little Blog says
I think you need some big white pillows (European shams?) to layer with the ones you have. As for the quilt, stick with the most functional arrangement and mix it up from time to time. I’m liking the way it looks at the end of the bed.
Megan A. says
I agree with Emily all the way.
Centsational Girl says
Your colors are gorgeous girl and I love your new quilted cover ! I want it.
I prefer it folded at the edge of your bed, but I’d love to see a plain cover for your white quilted duvet, I think the two boxy patterns compete a bit. BTW, I love your pillow shams and accents you had in your first pic – those blues and grays are divine !
Amanda @ Serenity Now says
I think I like the white comforter underneath with the brown on top, folded in half. I definitely think some more large, white pillows is a good idea. I LOVE the monogram above the bed, by the way. 🙂
Thank you so much for linking up…I hope you’ll receive some good visits! 🙂

OMG………I love them all. Change it every day!

Sheesh… I should have re-read my comment b/c there were a few typos!!! Sorry!

Hi Kim! The challenge with bedding is all to familiar with me! I finally settled with white on white for us so from one “white girlie” to another…
I liked the comforter on the bottom and the quilt folded in half on top – both functional and attractive.
Pillows wise… I say Euroshams in white or a white dominant pattern, your king pillows, and then a long rectangular pillow that reaches the middle of both the king pillows in length and halfway up the king pillows in height. I am assuming you have a king bed and I always feel like they need something substantial pillow-wise to match the “heaviness” of the size.
I love your blog!

I love white bedding too! That’s what we’ve got in our bedroom now 🙂 And I’m trying to work out a similar dilemma with the quilt/pillows combo, etc. So let me know what you decide!
Jen @ homeinthecountry says
I like the comforter on top look, but if it’s impractical – don’t do it. Who wants to mess with the bed that much?!
As a second choice, I’d pick the quilt folded medium-width on the foot of the bed. Or? Maybe get rid of the quilt altogether, add a dust ruffle in a brown that would go with the headboard.
And I think I’d try bigger pillows on the bed, too. Maybe something a little lighter or white to go with the white sheets…
Ally says
Question 1: B
Question 2: I am not the person to ask! I love your inspiration pics though!
Amanda says
I think I’d like something in between option B and C – maybe folded in thirds? Also, I’d buy big square Euro shams first and see how that helps. It just seems like that’s what’s missing in comparison to your inspiration pictures.
Nancy says
I choose look B. As for pillows, sorry I can’t help you there; I am a ver indecisive person. I like what you have already, but that’s just me. Good luck deciding! Your room really looks nice!

First of all, your bedroom is divine. I am hoping that some day I will be able to have a pulled together bedroom. For now I will live vicariously through all my blogland peeps.
I like option B for the comforter arrangement. I think that it would be neat to go with white large pillows and then use your fabric to make a stripe of color down one side. I don’t know if you are looking for this, but I think that you could add some mirrored picture frames for some pop on the walls.
Dan and Deb says
I like “B”, BUT is making it up to look like that a lot of trouble to go thru in the AM when you’re trying to get to work??
Mrs. Adventure says
What color are your walls? I have been looking for a good shade of blue for the spare bedroom and I love yours.

100% B all the way. I love the quilt at the bottom it looks so dramatic. Not sure about the pillows though.
Sarah says
Comforter on the bottm — Fold it back a bit…Quilt at the foot of the bed–folded in half for easy night time extra warmth. 4 king sized pillows and 2 euro shams
Can’t wait to see what you do! I tiwll look amazing no matter what
Rachelle says
I like the quilt underneath look, I wouldn’t have thought of that one! But I like it, but if it’s not practical then I like the quilt folded nice and narrow at the bottom..
I’d go for more pillows and it’d look great!

Beverly @ The Buzz says
I like “C” best. What a great transformation. Wanna come do my bedroom? It’s got me pulling my hair out!
Laura says
I agree with everyone else- white comforter on bottom with quilt on the top, and you need more white pillows. I think you need one really great accent pillow. Maybe something a bit larger and more substantial than your current pillows, and it should for sure have some of the brown from the quilt in it. I love the blue walls, and you are on the right track for sure!
Danielle and Clint says
I really liked B, with C as a close second. The punch of white really brings a spa feeling to the room! I didn’t mind your pillows at all!
Emily says
I like the white underneath with the quilt on top – my preference is a happy medium between b and c for how the quilt is folded, but leaning towards the narrower look so that brown is just an accent, not the main feature.
For pillows, I’d say white basics with a few fun patterns. Maybe 2 white Euro pillows and shams closest to the headboard, paired with one set of king sized white pillows, and then one fun and funky print?
SarahKL says
I like option B for the quilt and agree that some Euro shams would be great behind your white pillows, in the blue or honey color (I can’t tell if it’s yellow or tan or what on my screen) – my opinion would to not do white or brown though, just for a little more contrast. Lookin’ good! 🙂
Jenny @ Words on Wendhurst says
I think you need some more big white pillows, whether you buy/make European shams, or even a king sized body pillow with a white cover running behind the normal pillows. Then I would have two small throw pillows in white with brown accents (predominately white though) and maybe a little bit of blue to pull in the wall color. Then one fun pillow that pulls all the colors together, and predominant color. And I like options two and three for the quilt. 🙂

As I was looking at your room, I thought, “Wow. That looks a lot like mine…”
Now I know why! We have one of the same inspiration rooms–your picture number 5, I think. I found it on RMS a couple of years ago, and fell in love. We have been slowly moving in that direction for a while now. I love the white bedding!
