I have a list of things I want to make that I find on the Internet (mostly crafts). I made a spreadsheet to keep track. That’s what NORMAL people do, right?
I just looked at it. It has 153 projects on it. Is that normal?
So far, I’ve recreated 8. Maybe 9. The problem is that spending time on the Internet discovering new projects takes time away from completing copycat projects.
It’s quite a quandary. (The word quandary makes me thankful that my Mac has built-in spell check.)
So. Let’s just get it out in the open. It will make me feel better. I don’t think that I will be able to finish those 153 projects. (Or the 3,054 more that I will find and add to it.) Ever. And, that’s probably okay.
But, for kicks, here are a few projects that I do really hope to try to recreate. Let’s call this the scaled down list:

So thankful I’m not alone! My list is around 60… and I’ve completed about 4. Ahh… it feels good to admit it. 🙂

I’m with you- I have a huge favorites file of crafty links. Although lately I’ve been thinking about printing them. I’ve been having some computer issues,I’m scared I might lose them. I made the buttercup bag- I think I posted it. It took 4 times longer than I expected and was much smaller. I would suggest you make the pattern about 50% larger.
Jenny @ Anything Pretty says
I would love to see your spreadsheet….except maybe for the fact that it would add to my list of things to make. Which would be very bad. I am really trying to not save everything anymore to lower the craft stress level of getting things done. But so far it it has not been successful. Seeing your buttercup bag to-do reminded me that I posted it also on my crafty to-do last April. Ouch.
Kristen @ Miss Prissy Paige says
i’m with you i have about a million projects tagged and book marked. one of my goals this month is to organize them all and try and get a handle on things. the internet is overwhelming!
Joi says
Those are great! I agree though, I never know how so many people get to be so dang crafty. I love the inspiration, though!

Blogs are what make me feel inadequate. I was perfectly happy with the way our last house was decorated, but now that I have been exposed to all these lovely homes out in Blogland our old house is seriously laughable… Now this house is going sllloooowwww….
Leigh @ Kesler Expressler says
I’m a spreadsheet junkie. I love ’em. Thank goodness for Google Docs (&Spreadsheets).
Nicole Peterson says
My Google reader has so many postings starred with the full intent of me coming back to them and trying all the wonderful ideas I have seen. But do i ever do ? It’s just too much goodness and too little time.
Laura says
Yes, I do the same thing. Although my list isn’t quite as long, I’m just as overwhelmed by the internet. The pom-pom garland is on my list too!
Kimberly says
Wait. A spreadsheet? That makes so much sense! I just keep printing things off. It was starting to really give my printer a workout.

You are spot on! I don’t have a spreadsheet (although I like that idea and may have to start one). Instead, I email links to myself with the project name in the subject line and file them in folders like “DIY/Crafting” or “recipes”. Having them in the email makes it easy to search for them.
PS. Thanks a lot, I love that receipt wallet and added it to my ever growing folder of ideas. 🙂

I feel that way all the time! I only let myself look at Ravelry when I’m at work (I have a job that involves a lot of downtime), because when I’m at home I don’t want to waste knitting time! The crate covers you posted are so lovely, I don’t sew yet but I really want to learn.
Jennifer says
okay, the buttercup bag, button canvas (LOVE!) and bike bag are all SUPER CUTE. I can see that this is going to happen to me when I finally take my sewing machine out of the box.
I already have this problem with recipes I find online. I mean, I prob owe my office mega bucks for all the paper and ink — whoops!! it’s really getting out of hand.
Nakiya @ Taste of Baltimore says
I feel that way ALL the time. I don’t have a spreadsheet, but I save everything to my email account and star things on my Google Reader. In fact, even my organization system is a mess.
What does your excel spreadsheet look like? That sounds like something I need to create for all my project ideas.
MV says
Yes! I don’t have an excel sheet, but I do have an overloaded favorites folder with stuff I want to make and now I have a few more 🙂
Abbey @ Practically Perfect says
I LOVE that little button letter…that’s something quick that even I could do!
I also love your repainted kitchen…somehow I missed seeing that yesterday. I have that same “Eat” sign only mine says “Read” and is one of our bookstores. Love Pier 1!

Oh yes I definitely feel that way!!!
Amy@My Front Porch says
YES. I don’t have a spreadsheet, just a list of links to return to and I feel like such a slacker everytime I look at everything I HAVEN’T done 🙂
Mom says
Oh Kimberly….I’ve GOT to have a bag for my bike. I love it and everyone makes fun of my bag that hangs on the front handlebar and rubs my tire. What a GREAT idea! But I have a girls frame so I gotta check it out to see where it will fasten. GREAT list you have created. I can’t wait to see the rest!
Kelly says
I totally understand what you’re talking about! I use Google Reader, so I actually star everything I want to do. I went through the other day, and I had 500+ starred items! Crazy!! So I narrowed it down a lot, but I still don’t see me doing all of those. I guess we’ll see. But thanks for being so honest. 🙂
LizzieBeth says
I totally feel you. I look at people’s beautiful homes and then I look at my 900 sq ft apartment full of hand-me-downs and feel completely inadequate!

Definitely adding the letter canvas to my to-do list!
Shannon says
Yes! Sometimes the internet makes me feel like the most unproductive person ever. Like when I choose to clean my bathroom over getting all crafty. So I just tell myself that people on the internet with their daily craftiness have really dirty bathrooms. And that makes me feel a tad better.
Mrs. Adventure says
Totally agree with you! I have a freaking binder of pages from magazines and print outs of things I want to make, find or buy. Everyday someone inspires me and gives me more ideas and tasks to try… its easy to get overwhelmed. I just tell myself that I loved my house before I saw that so its ok if it takes me a while to get it… or make it.
Jenny @ Words on Wendhurst says
yep, me too. although it’s more often on the decorating front than the crafty front. but i hear ya. 🙂

Kimmy –
The internet absolutely makes me feel inadequate. In fact, I feel super lazy every time I read your blog….you’ve always got something going on! I feel accomplished when I get through a workday and manage to go home and put dinner together.
Plus I don’t have a crafty/artsy bone in my body, so I could never do all those projects.
Those crate covers are CUTE!
Kristi says
I am so with you. I have tons of projects in my head, but by the time I put our little one down for bed I am too tired to do anything about them. So, instead I sit on the internet and find more projects. It really is a vicious cycle.
Heather says
It does. I see all these cool crafts and think “That is cool, but I don’t think I can ever do that” I want to learn how to sew but we are selling our townhouse so I can’t go out and buy a sewing machine, so I have to wait until we move. I also have all my scrapbooking stuff and I see all these cool things, but again I can’t recreate them right now.
I do think I need to stop looking at crafts 🙂 I want to make that receipt thing too. I have it bookmarked 🙂
I think I might do a spreadsheet with websites because I see so many things too.
Those are some cool things you want to create.
